Do all the mods work for ph or are they regular users who have been given mod privileges.
Intrigued to see how it all works as they seem to do a brilliant job.

All the moderators on PH are unpaid volunteers, some HM staff Mr Will, RacingPete, Garlic and Stuart also moderate when workloads allow.

Ok I see.
So how long does one need to have been a member before they can apply to become a mod.
I presume you are only considered if you've had a clean history eg anyone like me who has had a 3 day ban will be considered a liability?

There are about 20 mods in all most of us have been around since Teds early days average membership is about 100 months.

Back in those days there were no forums bans, if you broke the rules it was a swift and painful kicking from Ted behind the Sin Bin if that didn't work then it was out on your ear with a full site ban.

Yup - much like politicians - the very desire to be one, should ban you for life from ever being one.

For/from...meh

I was actually thinking the other day 'who are the mods here?' - since there is no obvious sign (that I've noticed) of who is or isn't.... just that some random comments hinting at who is...or the final post in a locked thread.

Is there a list somewhere (or a not so secret 'handshake' on their profile?)

Just idle curiousity, as on at least one other forum I go on it is clear on each post that someone is a mod or whatever.

I would like to add (in case anyone misunderstands my curiousity...) that I do think that they generally do a good job (thankless task on any forum I know!) - perhaps looking in on some of the more rabid postings in the General Motorsport section might be handy... or maybe it is being done and kept below the table wink

It's more fun this way, it's like moderator roulette wink

Seriously though, who the moderators are is not a secret but if it was next to their names it would limit their ability to post as a normal user when they are not moderating, which as they are long term users of the site we obviously want to avoid.

It would probably surprise many the amount of posts/threads that we effect each day, it's just that we try and do it subtly and without disrupting the flow of the thread. Hopefully that seems to work most of the time, though every now and then someome seems aggrieved for whatever reason.

We discussed a long time ago (amongst the mods) to have mod tags (or something similar) but it was thought it would make life more difficult, not easier. So, instead, we just say when it matters smile

I seem to rememeber we had a bit of a mod recruitment drive, perhaps 2yrs ago? Asking for people to put themselves forward. A few new mods came as a result.

As for a list...there's a couple in this forum, will try and find a link for you

OP: be careful for what you wish for as it is far harder than I thought it would be being a mod on here....

It's far easier just to sit & hit the report button. Though it would be nice to "pull the plug" or suspend a newbie/ Probe owners membership when they're posting what may be considered offensive pics early morning.
Having said that it didn't take Kinky (mod) long to sort things out thumbup
