Is classified free for private sellers?

It is indeed. You can pay to have a premium ad (more pics and it appears at the start of listings) but that's optional.

I submitted a standard ad but it seems to have morphed into a premium ad without my asking, how does this occur?

I think as you have been here for ages you get a free upgrade, IIRC there was a cut off when they introduced the premium ads and people who were already members get them free

I don't know when the cut off was though, so not sure which side I fall

Smashing - thanks, I just hope it sells not like on another website when the buyer backed out with the claim "Hi my girlfriend pressed the wrong button on the bidding really sorry plus there is another car we have bid for & won really sorry m**c".

Correct, all members prior to a random day (I forget the exact date) in about July 2008 have free premium adverts on the site.
