Is this a new PH thing, or is something getting at my browser?

In this thread, POORCARDEALER's comment has a "sponsored link" on the word Porsche, complete with nifty tool-tip style gubbins when I hover over it.

Is this your doing, Ted?

Yep, it's a trial.

Got to keep the pennies rolling in to keep the Gassing Station well oiled.

Jolly good - so long as IE hasn't been hijacked, I'm a happy man. I'll even click on the link for you. Looks nice, and it's unobtrusive too.

Hmm Not sure how effective it is within context there.

The man rants about Porsche attitude then the advert is "Hey, how great is Porsche?"

"A totally typical and arrogant attitude from Porsche."

Still, an innovative idea. Hope you get an extra pie for dinner.

It's a system being used at www.computing.net and seems to be getting increasing acceptance.

I'd rather not do it as it is a little intrusive but all those bytes need to be paid for and the forums do generate a hell of a lot of pages these days.

A new server will also be online in the next couple of months to speed things up a bit.

I just found these too.

You could at least sell Lotus to someone with something British sports car related to sell!

Can I buy "feck" "fecking" and "broken" please

Are we talking about where certain words in posts are double underlined and if you hover the mouse over them then you get a bit of text describing it and then you have an option to click it?

If so I have noticed these and don't find them a bother at all, are you using the mouse to follow what you read like when reading a book?
Tip: Leave the mouse to one side when you read, that way the link wont be activated.

If they are not what I describe above then I don't know what you are talking about.

That's them, yes. Can't say I find them annoying at all, to be honest. Barely noticable really, but obvious enough that curiosity makes me click them.

IMHO its a good way as it doesn't interfere with browsing, and Ted get some more revenue so we keep free PH

I'm usually the first to defend your right to make PH economically viable, Ted, but I have to agree with you that they are somewhat intrusive. They also make the Gassing Station feel a little more commercial and less 'comfy' (for want of a better word).

Could I bung you a tenner a year for a "premium" account that doesn't have them, please?

I do know what you mean about 'comfy' but it's simpler to set up than a premium membership system

It's a trial. We'll see how it performs. Currently it's configured for a maximum of five words per thread.

I can see the truth in that.
It also neatly circumvents all the downsides of premium membership as discussed on previous occasions.

As you say - it is a trial. We'll see how it goes. Perhaps it will cease to annoy quite quickly. Or not.

Good stuff, but can I ask if it would be possible for the user to switch a tool-tip off? For some reason the pop-up plays havoc in my browser for some reason (they all do, not just PH) and make scrolling a bit of a nightmare for me

The link would still exist, but the "tool-tip" wouldn't interfere with the page and the browser for me...

oh, the main reason they are such a bug-bear for me that there are usually so many of the critters, it doesn't seem to be so bad on PH

Ted,

Sorry if this is a rant, but it is feedback for your website. These bloody adverts in our own replys is putting me off posting. Trivual though it may seem, I presume that I own the content of what I post, and I do not wish to become a platform for an advert which I was not previously asked about.

Furthermore, when a keyword jumps to a tacky website (the BMW one) that looks like it was designed by the same person that designed the infamous 'Quick Search Bar' that no one else can get rid off, it just looks plain cheap and penny pushing. I always like the prestigious image that PH has and I think this seriously tarnishes the brand.

I acknowledge that as your site becomes more popular, it gets more hits, hosts more stuff and needs more bandwidth and with more servers which all costs money. I don't mind a few well placed appropriate ads for relevent marques in relevent classifieds / threads or even the odd pop up, but to have your reply hyperlinked to an advert is wrong IMO.

As much as I may have become, in later life, a moany old git, the spot adverts would cause me to re-edit my posts and remove the trigger-word, so the adverts do not appear, but for all the hassle, I know that it would lead me to just cease to post anything at all, which would ultimately lead to ceasation of PH altogether. I am of a journalistic nature, and used to editing things all day. To have to edit things over and over for something which is supposed to be an evening wind-down, is too much like work.

Sorry, if it comes as 'outspoken' but I just find them plain irritating.

That's better.

Thanks Simon. All feedback is welcomed.

I did trial them in the news section a while back and didn't rate the idea there. I certainly thought that they were detrimental to the editorial, particularly with some of the naff words being highlighted.

The supplier has now beefed up the list to pick up on more relavent/prestigious words.

I was pleasantly surprised by the reaction to their use in the forums so far.

I need to run the trial for a couple of weeks and then make a decision based on the feedback from the users, my perceptions and of course the financial returns.

As a matter of interest, where else have you encountered them?
