In case others are not aware, it is possible to retrofit the soft-close door feature to early 650S. I had mine fitted at Ascot whilst my 2014 Spider was in for service. Cost c£2k inc VAT but has transformed getting in and out of the day car which no longer needs an embarrassingly hard slam simply to get the window to rise! Pricing is different for coupes and spiders, but well worth it IMHO if you drive the car a lot.

You're right Brital, its well worth having done but sadly you've been taken advantage of by McLaren Ascot.

Cost is circa £1400 inc VAT at all other McLaren dealers but McLaren Ascot, as they have a reputation of doing, have shafted you.

Nearly 50% increase for the same job leaves a bad taste, anyone considering having soft door close fitted should shop around.

Odd. I had them fitted at Ascot a few months ago and paid the price you have quoted Ian, not sure why Brital would have been charged more.

I have seen a few comments about Ascot on here and am mystified, they have always been top notch when I've dealt with them, I recently ordered my 720S from Ben and wouldn't have considered anywhere else, very happy with the transaction. There are some issues with delays getting work done but I believe that goes for all the dealerships, I don't think Ascot are any different in that regard.

There's been chat on the owners forum lately about Ascot substantially increasing their prices.

If you book your car in for a service they tell you they're fully booked for 2x months, but fitting of soft door close at £2k [when others charge circa £1400] and guess what.... they'll 'fit you in' in a week or 2.... I wonder why?

nb. I've seen non-franchised garages say they'll fit soft door close for £995 so at £1,400 main dealers are making good money, and at £2k.....!!!!!!!

My 12C Spider is currently in having its service. I had a call from the dealer asking if I wanted the soft close door mechanisms fitted under warranty. Of course I said yes.

The dealer?

Ascot!

I was quoted almost £1400 to have them fitted by McLaren Manchester, so as just the parts cost is £500, I purchased just the latches from them and am gonna fit them myself. Can get some more Carbon bits with the other £900!! Lol

Soft close doors on the 12c still impress me. Had them fitted and makes the car seem so much modern and satisfying. Worth doing if anyone is considering it?

I also had this done and it makes a big difference, particularly with new passengers who don't want to slam the door and inevitably have to try twice to close it. Much better value than some extra carbon bits!
