I see some have a front plate and others don't. Whats the position legally? Ive looked at one to buy and its never had a front plate. Confused now.

The law says you have to have one, as does any MOT test that you'll put the car through in future.

If the police stop you, you could tell them it keeps falling off and so you're trying to find a better way of securing it. They might let you off with that, but it doesn't change the law and they'd be within their rights to give you a fine.

With a normal plate attached, there is a potential issue with the parking sensors picking up the plate, so often a stick-on plate is a better option. It actually looks better too. There are apparently legality issues with stick-on plates too; when I bought mine, I had to purchase them as 'show plates'.

Never you mind

No front plate on mine. No problems from plod. MOT no problems. But I do hear of some people getting pulled and a fine.

I got booked with a £100 fixed penalty notice a few months ago when Robocop pulled me over in my GT3..He also cautioned me that a repeat offence is a £1K fine and even court appearance..

I just played stupid but obviously not very convincing..It depends on whether or not you get stopped by the Keystone cops or sadly in my case Robocop..!

I drove about with no plate for a month after getting my car.

Had zero interaction with any of the police I encountered beyond one officer winding down his window to say how much he loved the car.

However, I've had the plate put on the front. It just felt strange not having it.

I actually prefer the car with a plate.

Why would you think driving a McLaren makes you above the law ? Its a legal requirement to display a front number plate which we ALL have to abide by.

Not on my first one, I have been asked by several passers by why the car has no front plate, I have had to explain to them that McLarens do not need a front plate biggrin

Second one, I keep the front plate in the frunk with double sided tape attached, along with an alcohol wipe and Halfords receipt with the date removed and I am just on my way home officer to stick it back on because it fell off.

not true, the police generally don't care when supercars have no front plate

It is true. Whether the police choose to act on it is another matter. Same as having incorrect spacing, etc.

a 911 isn't a supercar though is it, i would imagine over 99% of regular 911s have a plate, which singles you out as an exception as most people can't tell the different between a GT3 or Carrera. A McLaren, Ferrari or Lambo is a different proposition IMO

How ironic that, unlike every other "supercar", all modern McLarens bar the Senna have been designed specifically to have an appropriate location for the front reg plate....
