These cars seem to be a relative bargain now, are they really as unreliable as is described? can you still get a decent warranty for a 2012 car?
There is one up for sale with an RAC warranty, would this be worth the paper its written on, I saw one American video and the steering column had failed, I think he said it cost $35,000 to repair, something to do with it sharing the oil with the suspension components.

Good question. Personally I think on forums you will always hear about the bad stuff, rarely will you hear about the good stuff - people just need to vent. As such reading forums IMHO, is not the most accurate way to ascertain reliability.

Overall, I don't think McLaren are any worse than Ferrari however they do lack a specialist, independent network which limits options. I've read reserve £5k for a McLaren warranty however you probably need the warranty before things break smile

Whilst I have no experience of RAC and their warranty, i'd pop over to this Warranty Direct thread to see what after market warranties can be like

Our American brothers like to dramatize things to the n'th degree. But parts and servicing for any euro motor is 2-3 times here (and that's at an indie)... in the EU costs are more reasonable

$150,000 worth of repairs on this 12C, thats insane!!

From the sounds of things though McLaren warranties must be very comprehensive and they must be good at honouring their warranties.

You need to treat these sorts of stories with a heavy degree of suspicion I'm afraid. The suspension story is a good one in that, whilst I'm sure the dealer may have taken advantage of McLaren over it the material facts of the suspension system and steering don't back it.

The lift aspects of the dampers do share a common fluid, so if a lift damper fails it will come up as a steering fluid fault not lift. It doesn't affect the suspension in any way. However as the unit (damper with lift fitted) is one and the same and (at the moment, we are working on it) can't be repaired it does mean a new suspension unit, depending on model, approx £2500.

Thus far we've seen about 6, all 650s, nearly all front left damper. The steering is unaffected. So a $35k bill looks more like warranty ramping that real repairs.

^^^ Think this goes for pretty much most posts on here knocking cars.

Good to see some sensible words amongst the immature spats and just-because-I-can negativity.

I can imagine that it will be quality contributions like this from Thorney which will do more good for the McLaren used car market than anything else.

I've been a member here for years but only really recently got back mainly as I read some stuff which was truly horrific and really not true so figured some facts might help people. Some of the YT people really do the brand and the cars no favours as they seem to have no real buy in on the cars which affects all of them.

I've owned a 12c for the last 4 years, so I'm an owner first and foremost.
