From one McLaren to another ?
Discussion
So, just to change the topic from depreciation and reliability for a bit.. Has anyone moved from one model to another? Care to share any thoughts?
I have had my 540C for over a year now and starting to think about what's next. I really miss the roof off experience from previous cars, so a 570 Spyder seems a logical choice but worried it may be too similar overall to the 540.

I went from 12c Coupe to 570s coupe........I loved my 12c when I sold it.........thought I'd be back for another when the time came.....but when it did, once the rose tinted glasses were off i realised that, to me, it looked dated and out of line with the rest of the range. Also, there was no extended warranty past 5 years so the newer car, with warranty swung it for me.I have had my 540C for over a year now and starting to think about what's next. Whilst the airbrake of the 650s spider is fun......it's a novelty......a 570s spider could probably be got for not much more than a 650s spider.....without the need for significant annual warranty and servicing costs.......for me, I couldn't go from a 67 plate 570s into a 14/15 plate 650s with the old date interior and IRIS system........but that may just be me!

Definitely a more balanced view than mine!Whilst the airbrake of the 650s spider is fun......it's a novelty......a 570s spider could probably be got for not much more than a 650s spider.....without the need for significant annual warranty and servicing costs.......for me, I couldn't go from a 67 plate 570s into a 14/15 plate 650s with the old date interior and IRIS system........but that may just be me!
Would the 570 be different enough to the 540?
Good point about warranty costs

My last service and warranty costs were £5200 on my 12c.........my 570s 1st service was £521.........thats a big difference over 3 years............there are deals to be had on new or nearly new 570s spiders already in stock........Would the 570 be different enough to the 540?

I think from a 540c Coupe to a 570s Spider would feel like a fairly significant change in set up.....
I went from a 570S coupe to a 570S Spider and have just changed to a 720S, the change from the coupe to the spider was significant as you get that wonderful open air motoring experience. My coupe had the sports exhaust my Spider had the MSO titanium which on full chat sounded amazing, another benefit of the spider is when the weather is poor you can still drop the back window and listen to the exhaust note.
I specked my spider with the ten spoke super light weight wheels and the titanium exhaust which gets you a 12.4 KG weight saving over a standard spider as I was trying to claw back some of the weight gained by choosing a spider over a coupe.
I did several North Wales hooning trips in both the 570's and would be very hard pressed to tell the difference in handling between the two, the carbon tub being so rigid on the spider I could not tell the difference on the road.
720S is just plain mental, I thought the 570S was fast but the 720S is genuinely in another league 2nd 3rd gear full bore acceleration really pins you back in your seat and has taken some time to get used to.
My first coupe McBrum sold within four days of taking it in in PX, my spider again lasted four days on McLaren New Forests forecourt before it to was sold get the right spec and colour they do not hang around long.
Happy hunting.

Another vote for the 650s spider.
I went in to buy the 570s and walked out with the 650s. Besides the active aero, theres the suspension (makes it more palatable for less committed members of the family) and more visceral performance (despite the clever suspension) with subjectively less turbo lag. If the 720 is another league as in the post above, then the 650s is at least on the border of that league. I drove them back-to back-to-back on the same route. And I do prefer the analog look of the interior and the integrated look of the rear.
Of course the real one to go for would be a 675LT spider - but that IS in another league - for ££

Yep, it is too fast for normal roads. Blink of an eye you are in serious license losing territory. It scares the s

I’m a bit confused on why the 720s is too quick for the road as surely it’s down to your right foot?
You got me on that one.I tested a 570 Spider and 720S and found the 720 other worldly in its ability to go from slow to s
t your pants quick. The 720s is pushing out near to 780bhp as with all McLarens there quoted power is usually 5-10% lower than their actual
This is why their performance figures and more significantly drag strip performance is so much better than any other manufacturers equivalent
It is why the Lambo Performante has only the same real performance to a 570s and the 720s just runs all over it.
Not something McLaren shout about put fairly obvious when you put them back to back with the competition

The 720s which have been tested on decent dynos ie not the 6 second unloaded run variety have shown 745hp max, it is the shape of the curve, at the top end you have more than 700hp from 6500 to 8000 and the box keeps you right on it, I agree with previous posters the word terrifying describes the acceleration, 0-100mph in 5s through two 305 tyres is very exciting This is why their performance figures and more significantly drag strip performance is so much better than any other manufacturers equivalent

650S would be an interesting change. Never actually thought about it.
Hi Justin.Contrary to a previous post, a 650 spider would not be a step back.
Go for a late model, high spec and you would not in anyway be disappointed.
There is no point in being all chuffed with a £600 yearly service bill on a new car when the value it is shedding well exceeds double the cost of a super series service and warranty (£5200)...the prices of 650 spiders is getting to the stage that they will not be losing terribly much in value and may soon even be static.
There are only 20 or so 650 spiders for sale at any point...even less than 675lt. Personally i am happier my hard earned is in a superseries rather than a 5 series as there are always 135+ for sale and they keep churning them out even with no order and then huge discount...this causes lower prices and its already hard to sell a McLaren nevermind when there are so many similar for sale.
There are very few threads on here about problems with the 650. The 12C was rushed out and when the launched the 650 they seemed to have ironed most issues out.
Before my purchase, i spoke to 2 McLaren service managers...both said they very rarely see 650s in getting repairs or niggles sorted...just the yearly service. The general opinion is its the technicians favourite car due to few failures or complicated issues to resolve.
For myself, it will be another McLaren after this one...how could it not be? Anything after a Mclaren would be a huge step back. The 720 sounds great fun but i like spiders so it would be a long wait till they are in my price range and hopefully with the spider they have engineered all the daft wee Mcniggles out.
I will be up bridge of don way in 4-5 weeks...would be good to hook up and see your stunning motor...
