Having come close to buying a 570S soon after they came out, I'm now back looking at getting a McLaren. With the reset in 675LT prices, the depreciation of 720S, and a number of 600LT now available, there's now an interesting choice for spending ~£200k on a McLaren. As such, I'd love to hear the opinions of those who have driven all 3 (or failing that at least 2).

One for LotusJas to chip in with as he owns a 720 and has recently driven a 600LT. I have a 720, but currently have a 570 Spyder on Loan.

The 720 versus 600LT has been recently debated by the MOC UK. General concensus is that for road use and practicality, the 720S is the choice. For track and more driver engagement 600LT.

720 is more comfortable, quicker but less engaging. 600LT the reverse. From the perspective of speed and performance, there really is little in it on public roads, and would be rediculous / dangerous to push them both.

If the 600LT is a 570 on steroids, I think it would be difficult for me to live with on extended journeys and/or as a regular driver. I went out for a 2 hour early morning blast around the cotswolds yesterday morning in the 570 - My arms were aching when I got home. I've done the same journey in my 720 and got out fresh as a daisy.

Why did the 570 make your arms ache vs a 720 ? I found the steering even lighter in the 570 confused

I find the opposite, I don't know why. Maybe seating position? I've had the loan 570 for 1 week so still familiarising but I should be able to adapt from the 720 to the 570 easily. Also noticed that the pedals seem to be a little off to the left, instead of directly ahead as in the 720.

570 is an awesome piece of kit.

That is weird, the 570 has thinner 225 tyres on skinnier rims I found the steering even more direct and light than the 720........like you say the 570 is an awesome piece of kit very close to the 720 in lots of metrics.

These are all great car so which ever you buy you will have an amazing car.

For me the 720 vs 600 in drive and feel is akin to 911TT (720) vs GT3/GT2 (600).

My reasoning for not going with the 675 was purely down to wanting to go through the new car, personalisation process which is not important if you are looking at used.

I think the first post of MAC720S aka mickpsu nails it re 720S vs 600LT.

600 as daily is very inappropriate.

Well spotted. My previous identity was associated with a business I was involved with, but since I retired, have changed it to something more relevant to match my car and number plate.

Owning a 650S, I seriously looked at 720s and 675s.

I do like the look of a 720, I prefer the interior. Despite what people said, it didn’t feel faster on the road to me (than a 650). Both are ballistically fast and more capable, speed wise, than any road you’d be driving on.

Ride of 720 felt a step on, even more composed, even more magical. Steering felt better, and 650 steering is great. Exhaust and engineered pops and kicks more interesting. So 720 felt a step forward from 650, which is a phenomenal car.

But 675... totally different league.

+1.

All cars mentioned have capabilities way beyond the safe boundaries of public road use, no matter what your driving skills are. The 720 is great for a game of top trumps and everyday use. I bought the 720 because it is more suited to my lifestyle - I have covered over 6.5K since April 2019, using it as a DD. The RR is sat on the drive collecting cobwebs.

As MAC720S said, I own a 720S and just had a test drive of a 600LT Spider.

720S is the objectively better car, and is much quicker. But 600LT Spider was a more fun, and made me grin widely at even low speeds. This was mostly because of the sounds coming from it, with rear glass lowered (and top exit exhausts). A lot of popping, banging and gunshots.

720S is much better on road (more due to its witchcraft suspension, than power), but 600LT would be more fun (but slower) on track.

Both are fantastic.

PS. I also found the Sports Series pedals oddly off-centre, but you quickly get used to that.

Its for left-foot braking.

Now that I'm done with the routine double-declutching and rev matching - that's what I'm working on with my 650s. Really helps with trail braking for better turn in, which is the one area Macs seem to be (relatively) weak.

A 675LT spider in Napier would be my ultimate 'goto' after my 650 spider.

I feel the looks of the 650 / 675 just get better all the time and the 675 is the ultimate expression of that imho 'timeless' McLaren style.

I have always been a sucker for the large side scoops hence why i did around 15 years of F355 spiders...have never really liked any of the Ferrari styles since but the 650 spider ticked that box for me.

As you touched on the speed...i still havn't fully managed to calibrate my brain how insanely fast these cars are...the Ferrari was well quick enough for the roads but the Macs are, shall we say different.

A bit more detail/opinion...

If you want a do everything car, and plan to use it as a day to day, or near day to day car, I’d go for 720. They certainly made improvements over 650 that make it that little bit easier to live with yet still feel v special and “an event” to be in and drive. The ride and comfort, while still feeling sporty, is truly amazing. No Porsche I’ve owned or driven could vaguely compare. You could easily cross Europe with some long driving days in a 720 and be entertained and feel fresh after it. A 650 isn’t a million miles behind it though, given the prices of them, one shouldn’t be discounted. Particularly if you fancy a spider, in which case a 650 is a bargain.

A 675 is not as comfortable or practical. Turning circle is poor, making things like U turns and small car parks a lot of shuffling. Higher sills of older tub combined with race style seats make getting in and out harder - more a sense of occasion but a bit of a pain popping down to Waitrose. Ride is much firmer, but still has an amazing compliance unlike anything else i’ve experienced. Where 675 wins out is it is thrilling, it wants you to wring it out every single drive - reminding me long ago when the Integra Type R first came out and every journey was “a last gasp qualifying attempt”. You can’t help it, it feels so good, is a bit scary yet very confidence inspiring. Both flatters you as a driver but also puts you in your place as it can do so much. Steering is superb, almost telepathic turn in and positioning. Combined with ride and composure it lets you make great pace, while being fully entertained. It’s a car you want to go out in purely to drive.

All comments re road use. Not experienced a 570/600 to compare

Cheers for the thoughts and comments. Test drive booked in 600LT and 720S for Saturday. Interestingly, the dealer also has a 675LT up for sale so there might be scope to try too. They also have a Hurcan Performante which was another consideration!

The orange one at Hatfield is a nice example.

The white one at Ascot not in my view.

Alistair Bols is best person to go to.

If you want an LT, don’t go by just what is listed, a buyer with serious intent will often get access to more choice
