I've started a thread over in the forum Business about the realities of running an EV (most likely a Nissan Leaf) as a business leased company car: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Has anyone here done that, and how is it working out?

(And as a bonus question, do we think the 2014 electric Kia Soul is worth waiting for?)

I'm putting my Rex through as a company car and after taking tax NI saving etc into account but charging myself for insurance and maintenance it will cost me a net of £310 mth which should mean I make money as we spend £800 mth on diesel between two cars.....

At the end of the day though it will be specific to your situation so you need to work the sums out and see what it gives you.

Kia Soul has a bigger battery than the competition and is no more "weird" looking than Leaf or i3, so probably worth waiting for if you are not in a hurry...not sure when/if it arrives in the UK.

Thanks, chaps. The Leaf is still the front runner (i3 looks good but lease deals not so good). At least the joys of leasing means that I can take a Leaf for 2 years and then look at the Soul/etc.

One thing that was suggested to me about having an EV as a company car: set it up so that I personally pay for the fuel (recharge point being at home), and then reclaim all of the business mileage at the NNp/mile (excluding the commutting and private mileage, obviously). That return should offset the BIK charge that becomes increasingly payable from 2015 for 0gCO2/km cars.

I'm not sure what that NNp/mile rate is though, and haven't been able to find a directly relevant page. Here - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current.... - it implies 9/12/14p. More headscratching...
