Hi there.

Just wondered if anyone uses free public charging points?
I'm thinking of getting one installed at home in the garage but I'm curious if there are any that can be used for nothing?

I know our local Sainsbury's have a couple but not sure who operate them, and I'm sure the local Asda has some.

Thanks in advance.

We have a few in Islington, they charge a nominal fee for using them.

Lots, in fact most charging points are currently free, but sadly most will charge from 1st April.

There are lots of providers such as ecotricity, charge your car, and chargemaster. Just google ev charging.

I have a plugged in midland card which cost £20 per year. This enables me to use almost all midlands council chargers for free.

The problem is, will I need a card for each county?

PIM covers a reasonable area. I also have a ChargeNow card (£20), an Ecotricity card (free) and a Chargemaster card (expires end of March).

You can also use

Also, Derby City Council are telling me their points are only available outside of working hours. I've queried this with them and PIM but I'm still waiting for a reply from either...

Yes, as from a week on Tuesday their charge points are going to get pretty expensive to use. The rapids are £7.50 for 30 mins and owners are saying they are taking longer than 30 mins to get to 80% (some cynically suggesting they've been throttled back but who knows?). Personally I don't care because I don't plan on using them.

Interesting. One of their guys told me they were contractually bound to give 3 months notice of charging and as of early Feb that hadn't been done...
