Not sure about the provenance of the think tank, but it would appear that EV's are not the magic bullet that the fanatics would have us believe...

Been discussed multiple time on here. The key part is "in Germany" due to their coal (and particularly polluting type of coal) fuelled power plants. Do the same study in the UK (or in Germany in a few years once the coal plants are shut down) and EVs are way less polluting that ICE vehicles.

It's been extensively debunked in the past but the short version is that it cherry-picks the most optimistic view possible for the diesel car and the worst possible case for the EV.

Follow the second link on the IER page to the Brussels Times story and they had felt the need to publish an update to it:

Update:

Since publication, the study has faced a raft of criticism over selective use of data, reports German press.

According to “WirtschaftsWoche” the study contradicts “in a blatant manner as well as all serious, international studies in recent months,” while mobility expert Don Dahlmann explains that the study is counting on wrong numbers. The Federal Environment Agency points to an extensive earlier study, according to which e-cars perform better than diesel cars.

The point has also been raised that in the calculations of the production of electricity, other emissions involved in the production of the cars were not taken into account, reports Spiegel.

It's been pretty widely debunked eg - https://eufactcheck.eu/factcheck/mostly-false-elec... and https://twitter.com/AukeHoekstra/status/1120327764...

For example, it assumes a battery becomes hazardous waste aftter 150,000km and ignores that many will be recycled/reused. It's also based on Germany's mix of electricity generation which, at the time, relied heavily on coal.

They also use the NEDC figure for emissions for the vehicle (which are unrealistically low) and massively overestimated emissions for the EV.
