Our new home will be complete in a few months. Presently there is no connection to the mains, do I need to ask them anything such as keep it unlooped for an EV charger?

If it still needs connecting to the grid, I'd get 3 phase.

If the supply is looped it’s usually two or more houses in a ring

Single phase car charging is limited to 7kw or so, 3 phase is usually 11-22kw depending on the vehicle.

I think 3 phase makes it trickier for solar etc tho.

3 phase gives you more options if you want to "go large" with solar.

You can put a solar array on one phase (say the one that supplies the domestic load) or all three. As far as your house is concerned, it will be likely running off a single phase - your garage will have all three for machinery. A solar array on the house is just like any other installation.

Here in Switzerland 3 phase is the standard to go into the house. It then is converted to the 'standard' 220V needed by most appliances. Hence you effectively have both options and it all depends where you connect things.

Very few EV owners seem to have wall boxes here as most think that 3 phase is sufficient.

as most devices are auto switching for power these days would I need to convert the 3 phase into 240v for the house?

Sounds a faff but I'll look into it

No, Each phase is 240v line to neutral & 415v line to line.

As they have 3phase I assume a 32a commando at 12kw or some such

Could get away with it here on a single phase but I wouldn’t want to risk not having the grounding rods etc or the class b breaker

What do you mean having the grounding rods or class b breaker?

An earth rod is a £20 bit of kit.

A B curve RCD is £40.

Neither of the above will give you the plus points a 3 phase supply will give you charging a EV?

Nor would it be legal (within building regs)

I’m going to speak to the developer to ask the dno how much extra if any it would be to install 3 phase
