EV road trip - Cambridge to Lake Garda, Italy June 2021
Discussion
We are in the very early stages of planning a road trip to Lake Garda in Italy for a mid June 2021 departure - we plan to be away for 14 days ish
When i say we, it will just be me and my other half. No kids, no pets.
i have yet to pick an exact route, what places we want to hang around in, what hotels we want to stay in on the way, and we are going to have to factor in charging/rest stops and do we go through the centre of Switzerland or around the outside etc etc
We have never done anything like this before however i am not a stranger to up and down the country in the UK for work, i also enjoy driving in areas i've not been before, especially if they're pretty
Distance - 900-950 miles (without any detours)
Car we will be using - Kia e-niro 150kw / 64kWh (being delivered this month)
Claimed electric range - 280 miles
Reported real world range - 250 miles
Our target per charge - 200 miles.
Anything to watch out for / places to avoid
Has anyone else done something similar? any tips?
would people be interested in updates? how our experience went? any information you might want to see ?

A Better Route Planner is a good tool but you need to plan in multiple stages if you intend to charge overnight at hotels.

As others advise a better route planner is good (albeit geeky).
Personally I would just go the Ionity site and look at using them exclusively for the main journey there and back.
If you stay under 70mph, your eNiro will give you closer to 220 to 230 miles on fast roads with no real energy recovery from braking.
I think the e Niro can take charge at 77kW for the first 80% of the battery state of charge. I would work on charging back up to 80% at each stop as the charge rate drops down dramatically after that and you're better off driving that sat around trying to squeeze that last bit into your battery.
If you follow this logic, you;re looking at around 180 to 190 miles for each hop after the first charge.
Hope this helps.

that's fantastic, thank you. i had planned for the 80% soc theory, and the 180-190 miles kind of fits with my loose 200 mile breaks plan.Personally I would just go the Ionity site and look at using them exclusively for the main journey there and back.

Ionity do seem to feature quite heavily, they were one of the main ones i was going to sign up with before departure.
I am looking to a similar sort of trip next also, also in a eNiro.
Having downloaded and registered with Shell Recharge, and obtained a RFID card, the app is showing several hundred eNiro compatible chargers between Coquelles and Italy.
Various networks appear to be represented, and it appears that they are all accessible with a mixture of using the app, using the card, and using a credit card. The costs are shown too, and vary between really pretty cheap to really rather expensive - not that I'm too sensitive to price on a long journey, it's more about availability and reliability.
Does anyone have any experiences of this app/card/network combo? It looks like a one-stop solution

Do you still have the Z4 in your profile?
If so, take that.
You will be in reach of some of the greatest driving roads in Europe, and will regret being in the EV when you get there.
We do have the Z4 still, but there is no way if would be practical for that whole journey. Totally hear what you're saying, and agree, for 10-20% of the trip i'd wish we were in the BMW, but for the other 80, the practicality of a good sized, brand new car that costs pennies to run would win out.If so, take that.

have you seen the size of the z4 boot when you have the metal roof in there too?

For 90% of the trip where it matters you want to be in the convertible, for 10% of the trip (when you just want to come home) you want to be able to just crack on you can do it easily in one day in Z4, it would kill you to do it in a day the Niro.have you seen the size of the z4 boot when you have the metal roof in there too?

EV doesn't avoid the tolls, and doesn't avoid the Vignette in Switzerland
Well we are planning to go from London to lake garda in a couple of weeks corona dependent! I certainly thought shell and ionity were the answer although I'm not sure in Switzerland, although I can tell you they have loads of electric chargers just not sure want make/cards/app etc...
