Hi. Having recently taken delivery of a bmw 330e it's become clear that my companybhasnt yet formalised it's policy 're how it charges it's employees for hybrid vehicle mileage..

My understanding is HMRC rate is 14p per mile for a hybrid, ( same as petrol ).

Obviously this seems a bit harsh if you charge at home overnight and travel on electric power to the office, charge whilst there and then travel home on electric.

I appreciate the BIK is better for a hybrid but 're claiming cost back for fuel it seems unresolved? I guess it's impossible to know how much of a journey was on electric or petrol therefore they are charging at the petrol rate as a cover all but has anybody got a different policy or is there a way around this?

Thanks for any insight as might help me put something forward..

Our policy has been similar. We lose the fuel card( no private miles type) and have to claim back 14p per business miles. As long as I get 38mpg I’m quids in. I will be charging everyday as that will cover a good chunk of my private miles. The 330e can be quite economical if driven sensibly.

Ours is the same, no private fuel benefit, and charge the company for business mileage.

have a look at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/advisory-fuel-rates

half way down it confirms Hybrid cars are treated as either petrol or diesel cars for advisory fuel rates.

for example mine is a 1950cc Diesel Hybrid, so I charge 10 pence per mile. of course I can't claim home to office, but then i'm not being taxed on a fuel benefit even through it is quite low with only having a 10% BIK rate.

I’ve also got a 330e and my company policy wasn’t set up to deal with hybrids so the arrangement we came to was that I pay for all fuel and claim business mileage at 10p/mile. I can charge for free at work which pretty much makes up for the 4p/mile difference from the AFR.

One of the reasons why i went for the BMW PHEV over the VAG offerings, and the merc Diesel Phev, was the lower petrol cost, and higher Pence PM. with the VAG 1.4 PHEV i need to hit 50mpg, other wise business miles could end up costing me money, with the Petrol PHEV such as the 330e, i only need to get 41mpg to break even. With the merc DE ive got to achieve 52mpg.
