General Motors Co. recalled more than 50,000 electric vehicles on Saturday, warning that their high-voltage batteries could catch fire.

A notice was issued for 50,932 Chevrolet Bolt EV vehicles dating from 2017 to 2019. It warned that the battery could “catch fire when charged to full or nearly full capacity.”

The company said a final solution is still under development, but as an interim measure it would offer at no cost to reprogram the “hybrid propulsion control module 2” to limit the charge to 90%.

Because they don't have remote software updates this recall is just to install some new software rolleyes

Imagine how much this will cost them and all because they didn't want to put a £10 4g modem in the car.

I'm not sure how these remote update systems work. Do they require you to keep a SIM card and contract running to allow them to work?

OTA - Over The Air updates require the modules in the vehicle to support it.

It requires cyber security as the vehicle is now internet connected.

They need a data plan for that mobile net connection.

It needs the backend infrastructure to support it.

It's a lot more than a £10 4g modem, car ones are more like £300-400, probably more. Not including all the stuff above.

Sounds almost identical to what Tesla had done, maybe as these battery packs age a cap in charge limit will become 'normal'. Hyundai are investigating some Kona fires as well I believe, a mass recall is already underway.

Jaguar recent increased the top limit in the iPace packs to give owners more range, I hope that decision doesn't back fire in a few years time - literally.

If am needing to charge to 100% on our EV am keeping it outside on the driveway rather than in the garage. The fire risks on EV packs do appear to be a very real issue.
