So, I was perusing the price lists looking at potential EV purchase to replace my F11 520D Touring and there are two list price thresholds. First is £35k for the £3.5K EV grant and second is £40K for the surcharge on RFL. This got me looking at the Enyaq that comes in list just below £35k with no options and not even headroom for any colour other than doom blue. Trouble is I really need white for work (Chapter 8 livery) so it actually looks like having to buy blue and have a full wrap is cheaper than speccing white from new. Mad hey

The £35k limit for the grant is for base price - power / battery spec. Options that don’t change that don’t count so paying for a colour won’t lose you the grant.

Zero VED and no luxury VED on EVs helps a bit too.

Curious to know what's necessary on a dull, white goods car ?

Absolute madness. Say this car is competing with the Kodiaq, I reckon you could get the same spec, maybe even better for a good £10,000 less. If you’re not driven by the environmental considerations you’ll be a long time making up that difference via the cheaper running costs.

That is true of pretty much every EV on sale. The ICE counterparts are always significantly cheaper.

I was/am interested in the Enyaq but the price of the options has pushed me towards looking at the Q4 and IX3. If I'm going to spend >£50k I might as well go all in.

Or I might order a basic spec Enyaq. We convince ourselves we need all the options but do we really ? I'm not sure we do.

It's true for that too, really. Their "price equivalence" has been reached by making a whole load of options which are expensive to buy on the Golf but cost VW next to nothing to install, standard. The entry point of the ID3 is £10k more than the Golf.

Taycan v Panamera is the only one I know of where the EV is cheaper for a very similar vehicle despite being more powerful and quicker. Both have the same ridiculously long options list also.

I guess it's easier to achieve with faster cars because the price difference between a powerful petrol engine and a not-powerful one, is a lot greater than between a powerful electric motor and a not-powerful one.

Certainly makes sense, just surprises me that with the huge BIK savings etc. that Porsche haven't taken the piss and made it more expensive. Got to have taken a decent bite out of Panamera sales you'd have thought?

Even the lease prices are considerably cheaper despite EV leasing costs being very high for most models at the moment. £12.5k over 4 years..

Well yes, but that's not an entry level Golf. The automatic gearbox is an option. The Golf starts at £23k, the ID3 at £31k (I'd forgotten they recently introduced a cheaper ID3, I had 33k in my head).

The whole point of the thread is to compare cars with completely different drivetrains which are otherwise similar!

And anyway even if you take that automatic Golf, the cheapest ID3 is still 20% more expensive. Don't get me wrong, the ID3 is a good value car; but there are plenty of people buying Golfs who can't afford an ID3.
