Toyota RAV4 plug-in - £46k

Is it just me or is this a lot of money? Hybrid RAV4 £32k - plug in £46k.

Am I missing something here?

To meet the fleet emissions standards and BIK boundaries you need a chunky sized battery to move a brick through the air in pure EV mode. So a 16kWh battery is a big chunk for Toyota who don't seem to have sorted their battery supply chain issues.

I think it’s trying to get us used to the idea that electric cars are a premium product and not a straight replacement for your petrol / diesel car.

I have year left before I need to replace my Lexus ES (or buy outright). I was sort of hoping that Lexus would have a suitable EV replacement as I would be crackers not to get an EV for bik company car tax. Even if they have a suitable product in the market by then, how much is it going to cost?

It's not so much that. Most EVs come with higher levels of equipment than their ICE equivalents because that's where the profit margins are on relatively lower volume sales (and company car sales for BIK).

Insane but I can’t afford even cheap normal cars at new price, so I may not be the right audience. To be honest I can’t see how anybody can.

Most ppl think in terms of monthly PCP payments rather than the sticker price. And as above, a lot of leccy cars and hybrids are business leased.

And what's that car going to be worth in 3 years time when new Electric car prices have softened, and their range is much, much, better?

Isn't it cheap? When compared with an XC60 Plug in Hybrid which starts from just under £52k.

5,000 miles per year PCP, and salary sacrifice schemes (1-2% BIK on BEV) make it affordable for most.

I asked the same thing of our Toyota GB fleet rep and apprently we (the UK) are only getting limited supply so why price cheap.

Better off with a Ford Mustang Mach E.

But I've been told to expect a big annoucement from Toyota GB on the 1st July.

Well they won’t sell many then, they need to show that EVs are a straight replacement for your normal ICE car, possibly with a small premium on price for “new technology”, but they shouldn’t be mining for profit so obviously.

Today I read about a Toyota Mirai doing 623 miles on a tank of hydrogen.

The article goes on to say "Together with Hyundai/Kia, Toyota is one of the biggest proponents of hydrogen fuel-cell tech".

So is electric really the guaranteed future?

Or will hydrogen just be for lorries?

No way would I be shelling out on an expensive electric car right now.

Dunno if it’s that many miles but mate has one as a works pool car and it costs £60 to fill.

Yup, fair point, electric is cheap for the moment.

But in the future the government will be clawing back lost revenue on fuel sales.

They're not just going to let that income go.

Yes,

There is an identical Suzuki version and they want similar money for that! At least it’s got all the bells and whistles on it. But I am not sure the brand can support a car with such a ticket.
