EV from Calais to Northern Italy (lakes)
Discussion
Hi there, I was wondering if anybody had driven to Northern Italy in an EV and had a good route for charging etc.
I am contemplating taking the EV (ipace) or the petrol car, I kind of thought the petrol car is pretty expensive to take so though I would try the EV but (a) charging on the go is not cheap and (b) it really doesn't seem to be the easiest thing - we drove to Cornwall a couple of months ago and yes we got there but it kind of takes a fair bit of planning and so on....
Thanks any input appreciated

I know nothing much about EVs, and even less about the different charging formats, but I do drive up and down to the lakes regularly.
French aires, at least those with fuel stops and cafes, seem reasonably well and universally populated with charging points. Italian ones perhaps less so.
FWIW, I’ve seen quite a few foreign (German, Dutch etc) EVs around Lake Maggiore, so others have made it long distances.

Would be great to hear how you get on.
We were going to take our Tesla M3 SR down that way this summer, but Covid put pay to that. We have always stop every 1 1/2hrs, so charging wouldn't really add any additional time for us, the only compromise would be where we stopped.
If you go via Belgium, then you'll avoid the French Tolls!

Currently relaxing in a Tuscan agriculturismo winery an hour south of Florence, 700km south-east of our starting point of Geneva.
ABRP is your friend, though given we are in a TM3 LR, planning and charging has been a (summer) breeze. Stop after 2hrs/200km and charge for 20 minutes whilst shopping/eating/drinking/using loo facilities: Aosta, Milan, Modena, Florence.
Will do the same in reverse, going back up north tomorrow after four marvelous days in the Mugello and Chianti.
Buon viaggio!

I am considering going full EV next year when lease is up (Mrs has a new Leaf arriving next week) and this type of journey is what would put me off. We always stop every couple of hours, and rarely travel more than 4 hours in a day, so this seems like a positive transitionABRP is your friend, though given we are in a TM3 LR, planning and charging has been a (summer) breeze. Over the years we’ve generally travelled in 200km chunks, be it by car or motorbike. Now 17000km into EV ownership, I’ve seen no real change in our car journey habits, except for missing all those cherished hours of standing around in all weathers in smelly service stations
Many thanks for all the replies...the app does seem to suggest there is lots of charging but they can sometimes be iffy....I wonder if French/ Italian chargers are more reliable than ours ...probably not...
The other thing that I think is a real pain is the cost....I mean okay it does not make that much difference but ionity charge a fortune, it kind of spoils the feeling of oh well its a bit if hassle but at least its not costing much ..... ionity at 80p per kw .....
