Hi all, almost an EV owner here, collecting in a week or so (fingers crossed), so I'm taking an interest in chargers everywhere I go.

Today I was at a Toby carvery and there is a charger with 2 connectors at the back of the car park. A car was already connected and playing nicely. A hybrid turned up and parked next to it. I watched as the occupants looked at the charger and realised it wasn't free, so they didn't use it, they just locked their vehicle where it was and walked into the pub, blocking the space for legitimate users. Selfish twunts. If a charger is blocked by a normal car, it's known as being iced. That got me wondering, what's the hybrid blocking term?

Ar5ehole?

I'm noticing this kind of tttish behaviour much more frequently. Some EV driving morons think it's their right to just park there regardless of wether they are charging or not.

Charging bays being close to building entrances just encourage this even further.

Sadly some folk only think of themselves which is a real shame.

Just make sure you've got a good charging solution at home and depending on the car you've ordered you shouldn't really need to be topping up at the local carvery as you're not going to stop idiots being idiots.

Or a horse!

All things aside, it is a problem and not really helpful. But when did people think about anyone else but themselves? Same goes for people who keep a pump blocked at a petrol station going inside to pay/shop.

Yeah, the main reason for that though is that that's the most cost effective in terms of cabling. As an EV owner, I'd rather have them on the other side of the lot but usually pulling a cable there would make installation a lot more expensive.

What he said.

Sharing things with other humans can be a pain in the ass.

100%.

Plus it highlights yet again how on street charging simply won’t work as there are aholes everywhere.

But why limit that accusation to only EV drivers?
How many times have you seen an ICE car parked and blocking the pavement, in a cycle lane, in a bus lane, in a motorcycle only parking bay etc?

This gives you just a small glimpse of what it's like to be a wheelchair using blue badge holder only to find disabled bays blocked by all sorts of unneccesary people.

Disabled people notice people parking in disabled bays who shoukdn’t

Families notice people parking in parent and child bays

Some people park in the middle of 2 bays in an attempt to stop people denting their doors

People park on curb sides preventing pedestrians and wheel chair users

People park on double yellow lines

The point being there are lots of inconsiderate people with cars. Doesn’t make it right at all, just don’t become an EV owner that moans about everyone else and then uses free chargers because they’re free and/or a bit nearer the entrance to where you’re going and denying people who might need to charge the ability. It’s relatively rare that anyone with a home charger actually needs to charge when out, they just do because they’ve freeloading.

Haha I'm a prick myself, driving the Twizy I always squeeze in there if I see someone parked like that. Petty, but it makes my day hehe.

Buy a 10 metre cable. You can park further from the charging point and still connect to it.

Been there, done that. Sometimes you can park adjacent, sometimes you just have to block the blocker in. If they complain, well they were blocking the charger and now can wait for you to come back and move.

If it's a Toby then maybe worth notifying the staff, ask if they can use the PA to request that the owner move. Great way to interrupt their meal.

Same, I have a little plastic thingy in the glovebox that has my phone number on it for such occasions. I put it on the dash if I have to park in an odd way to charge so they can call me and I can come and move my car if I feel like it.

WTF.
10m long cables were mentioned to reach the free charge point.

If anyone trips over YOUR trailing cable you are liable. If you don’t see that (clearly you don’t hence WTF) time to realise this is the world we live in & perish the thought what turns into a broken bone or the shock causes a heart attack for an older person…. £££ from you to fund medical attention / loss of work etc and compensation

Good point

Immediately ban all public charging.
