My dad has bought a Nissan Leaf. Upon getting the car it came with the standard granny charger. I’ve looked on the setting and under estimated time it does not say if it’s a 3.3kw or 6.6kw?? Any ideas?

It has the two ports for the different chargers.

IIRC only the 6.6kw displayed that. Mine was a 6.6kw (by chance)

But yeah, the most you'll be getting when granny charging is 3kw, which is fine and lots of people manage just doing it that way (overnight, etc)

For me it added approx 10 miles of charge per hour.

The two ports in the Leaf are the Chademo (big one) which can charge up to 50kwh and the type 2 which can do up to 7kwh (6.6) (if you have a 6.6kwh enabled Leaf)

The display under EstimatedTime doesn’t show either 3.3kw or 6.6kw it’s blank. So I’m not sure what model it is. The 3 pin plug charger was used last night. It took 10 hours, quite slow really, but over all okay.

I’ve bought a type 1 to type 2 charger just incase. So does that mean with public charging you can only charge at a slow rate?

If the car doesn't show 6.6KW charging time in the display than it doesn't have the 6.6KW charger.

So the max charge speed of the car via AC will be 3.3KW.

Okay. So for public charging it can only charge at the slower 3.3kw. Is it possible to upgrade it? Or is there much difference?
How do i know if it’s a 24kw or 30kw as it’s a 2015.

To confuse things even further, the Nissan 3pin charger is only 10 amp, so will max out at 2.4KW.

Thanks for the help. It’s a shame that it’s not the 6.6kw but nevermind as it’s our first EV that I think my Dad got for a good price. Can you upgrade to the 6.6kw? Also with public charging how long would it take and do you need any specific cards or can you just pay using your debit/credit card?

I think he is also going to take it to Nissan to get a full health check done. Along with MOT and Servicing.

Any help and advice with a charger for home?

You can upgrade the charge unit to 6.6 but a used 6.6 unit seems to cost about £1k

if you have the 6.6 then you'll see two ime to charge displays.

I'd expect a 2015 to be a 24kwh rather than a 30.

Get yourself a dongle and the leafspy app.

this.

Public destination charging (the freebie posts in supermarkets etc) will charge at 3.3. You'll get 50 (usually 35 ime) at a rapid with chademo.

How many bars and what range does it show? A good 30 will do 120 miles. we never got more than 100 out of our old 24.

Where do you get the dongle from please?

It’s got 10 bars with 32k on the clock. The capacity on the side when fully charged is 85.

Check the recommendations https://mynissanleaf.com/viewforum.php?f=44 and in the app notes.

The recommended dongle has changed a couple of times as manufacturers have changed the chips and board designs in the dongles. I have a konnwei but apparently there are issues with the current release.

Probably a 24 then. tbh it is hard to tell the difference looking at them. Some people say that only the 30 has DAB radio (and the sharkfin aerial) other people claim that they've seen 24s with dab.

There is a weight plate on the drivers side b pillar. apparently the 30s show 1970kg and the 24 1945kg

Much appreciated I will have a look at an ODB2 Reader and Leafspy. When pubic charging do you need a specific card?

I’ve also seen someone on YouTube with a number of great videos use this

TBH public charging is a mess. Too many companies wanting you to have apps/cards etc.

We used to get away with using a card from a european company that had roaming agreements with all the uk providers, but that went after brexit (I dont know if brexit was the reason, but hey its fecked everything else)

At least there is now a move to all new ones taking bank cards.
