Tesla Model 3 Performance - alternatives?
Discussion
I test drove a M3P today and liked it very, very much.
At around the same money, does anything else offer the same sort of performance and engaging drive?
(Yes, before anyone starts going on about it, I know it’s hardly the best driver’s car in the world for the money, don’t care, I’m talking about comparative EVs)

From a drivers perspective the Polestar 2 with performance pack would be a good bet. Not quite as fast but a nicely handling car ( if a bit too from for my liking)At around the same money, does anything else offer the same sort of performance and engaging drive?

As said the i4 which is ~450-500kg heavier and more expensive or the P2 which is again quite heavy
Out of those 2 (not having seen either..) I'd be more tempted with the BMW as its at least a saloon vs the cut down xc40, neither are dedicated ev platforms and it shows
The i4 is a hatchback and weighs about 300KG more than the Model 3 P (1900 v 2200kg), but does have a slightly larger battery.Out of those 2 (not having seen either..) I'd be more tempted with the BMW as its at least a saloon vs the cut down xc40, neither are dedicated ev platforms and it shows
Looking forward to driving one but agree it definitely lacks the practicality of the Tesla due to the shared platform.

i4 m50 = 2,215 kg
= 384kg so I was a little high at 450 but lets see when it gets on some scales aye.
What's your use case?
If I was regularly doing days over 200-250 miles, I'd feel happier with access to the Tesla charging infrastructure.
If not...the Polestar looks cool!
(that said, our EV is a Kona - 27k miles, very happy, but only plugged in public under half a dozen times, & most of those only to try it out!)

Need to wait for Bjorn to visit the weighbridge. I will say though that the M3P came in at 1960kg with him in it, and there's no way that little fella adds 130kg.

I like the look of the Polestar 2 a lot, but it’s just so heavy and the range doesn’t match up.
i4 is a good shout, again it looks far better than the Tesla to my eyes but it’s a shame about the weight. One to take a look at in the metal.
The EV6 looks superb, definitely worth a look.
My use case is short local trips during the week and then at the weekend journeys of 100 miles or so. About six times a year it needs to do a 220 mile (each way) trip but I’d always stop for a break at motorway services during that so it gives an opportunity to charge. The supercharger network is obviously a big draw.

to be honest theres few EVs that wouldnt do that nowcharltjr said:

I wouldn't worry about the weight too much, for long trips comfort and refinement will matter more. Supercharger network is great for availability but the Tesla charge curve isn't so good and the sheer amount of Model 3's on the road in the UK is increasing at quite a rate so will be interesting to see if it keeps up.i4 is a good shout, again it looks far better than the Tesla to my eyes but it’s a shame about the weight. Your 220 mile trip should be possible with just destination charging all year round anyway with the Tesla or BMW.
I agree, the range isn’t a massive differentiator for me.
I really enjoyed the way the model 3 went down a challenging road and also the sheer performance on tap. It’s always good to have alternatives to check out and see what I prefer.
I’m also a techie, so the technology of EVs is really interesting to me. I’ve got the budget to get a good one for the first time so I’m having a lot of fun car shopping

I'm sure you'll enjoy. Ours goes back next week after almost 2 years and the performance it delivers still makes me laugh after 18k miles.
I will say though, the opportunities to use it are fleeting. Most other drivers are just not calibrated for it so the level of concentration and self control required can be interesting.

I have just test driven the EV6 GT. The 4wd version is plenty quick enough and I was very impressed by the design and execution - a good looking, well built and very high spec car. Feels v luxurious too for the price bracket. Having tried the M3 recently my money would go to Kia every time. But then I rarely need to charge away from home.
PS And I being out-dragged at the lights by a Tesla worries you go for the 577 bhp version.

I'm waiting on the "proper" reviews of the i4 before I start looking at EVs. Do like the EV6 as well.
I've just bought a Giulia Quadrifoglio which I plan to keep for 2 years, so I'll be seriously looking at EVs this time next year.
The M50 claims 316 miles of range, but I'm going to guess it won't hit that unless it's in perfect conditions.
Like others I only really need 50 miles / day, but we do frequently (once every month or two) do 250-300 mile round trips, usually to places like the Lincolnshire coast or rural France to visit parents / in-laws ... Both of which appear to have little to no charging infrastructure.
We recently had a week away on the Yorkshire coast, and we'd have been pretty much stuck in an EV - 160 miles there, and the only charging points near where we were staying were 7kw, and 20 miles away.
I'm sure it'll improve in the next few years though.
