Evening All,

My wife is beginning to experience issues with her pod point connecting to Pug 2008E GT, not that I think it is the cars fault.

Issue is getting progressively worse. You connect the cable and hear the relays clicking in the pod, but either they click and do nothing, or they click and give a red light. Multiple tries at connecting do work, but I know the day will come when that doesn't work either.

I have looked up replacing the relays and it doesn't seem to be big topic on google. Any experience of people with the same would be appreciated.

Oh, the installation is just out of 3 yrs warranty rolleyes

Firstly, take a good look at the contacts in the charging plug handle and at the charging cable itself. Lots of times, dirt or damage means these contacts don't er, make contact, and this casues issues obviously. If these parts look good, then you need to look at the EVSE itself, and if you can hear the main relay click in, then as you say chances are it is that relay that is faulty. WHilst officially reparing the unit is probably possible, simply changing the relay for a new one, that should cost no more that around £50, really isn't very hard. Obviously, the EVSE needs to be properly and safely isolated or removed from thr mains supply before you open or investigate. If you have ANY concerns about being able to do this, get an electrician to isolate the EVSE.

if this is your EVSE

Then there are two high current relays, the large black plastic boxes, and they look to be soldered to the pcb, so will require some specalist skills to replace

£20 per relay from farnell. It looks like the "lids" of these relays are removable (there are little push in catches on the sides, but the lid may be ultrasonically welded on as well...) and i suspect you'll find the main power contacts are burnt/worn or contaminated. As a first zero cost measure, you can simply clean the power contacts with some 1200 grid wet and dry paper back to a smooth clean state. That may get you another year or more of operation out of the unit!

Depending on the switching order, you will propbably find only one relay, the one driving the Live Line 1 output to the vehicle is actually worn, because the Neutral relay is never closed or opened under load.

Yep, definitely check this. I recently had fast clicking on and off and I saw there was a bit of grit (not much) in the plug.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'll try cleaning, but if that fails I'll get our hardware tech to replace the relay for me.

Cheers
