Morning All

We have a VW ID3 hire car which we are struggling to charge. Could some one help with a quick summary of the correct process

It’s a bit charger dependant, so exactly where are you trying to charge?

Have you read the relevant part of the handbook?

I don't mean to be rude, but have you read the manual?

Also, what part of the process are you struggling with? A bit more information will help get you some good answers.

Plug the granny charger into the wall at home and the other end into the car port, job done.

Read the manual?! Insanity! One knows one never reads the manual. To do so would require immediate relinquishing of one's mancard.

Taken away on a low loader!

Thanks for all the help. Oddly we had read the manual, I was asking in case there was something that commonly caused issues.

Not sure - it wasn't my hire car, and I didn't get involved as there were already too many cooks!

Got it back the next day, fully charged. The rental company admitted that they had previously had issues with customers struggling to charge them, which was why I posted to enquire if there was a technique to setting up the charger.

The guy who hired it was 'upgraded' in Geneva Airport, then driven to a Chalet in the French Alps with a parking space across a small lane and no easy access to a socket. Extension cables were used but there was always a red light on the transformer (for want of a better word)

Likely to be down to the extension leads. The “transformer”(EVSE) as you call it checks the quality of the earth connection and if it’s bad, won’t allow charging.

You are supposed to plug these things directly into a 13A rated outlet, no extensions and preferably not on a spur either.

Issue can be caused by cold and the ability of the power socket used. If the lodge was charged by solar for example then almost certainly you would not be able to charge you car. Many other reason too
