How do manufacturers have the cheek to charge extra for the charging cable on an EV?

Surely that’s akin to putting a key code on the fuel filler flap for an ICE vehicle and charging £200 extra if you want the code to unlock it.

Daylight robbery!

You do not own the fuel hose at the petrol station and many home chargers are tethered ie they have a charging cable attached.

What odds is it manufactures can either include the cable which may or may not be necessary for an individual and increase the cost of the vehicle accordingly or offer it has an option?

My charge cables are unused.

A little moan always helps. Makes you feel better, doesn't it? Sadly, it's of no use to anybody else. It's like verbal masturbation.

What you could do is buy a car where the cost of the cable is hidden in the overall sum you pay. That'll teach 'em and your problem is solved!

If a fruity mobile phone company tried that people would laud them for their business acumen. Go figure.

They are like USB charging cables just more expensive but also more durable. Got loads already so don’t exactly need more.

I'm not sure that you have thought this through.

They can either include the cable as standard, and charge everyone £200, even when someone doesn't want / need the cable, or they can just charge those that do actually want / need the cable.

They could charge £200 but the reality is it would probably cost the manufacturer buttons so could be included for next-to-nothing extra. Extras / options on cars are always a complete rip off (or massive profit opportunity for the manufacturer, if you like).

Ok. So I seem to be very much in the minority here. Fair enough!

Just strikes me as mean to roll out a £50k+ (…could well be over £100k+) car and then charge extra for a cable. Comments noted about tethered home chargers and the fastest public chargers also being tethered. Perhaps I’m in the minority in wanting to sometimes hook up to a 7kW free charger in a car park if I’m there for 10 hours and needing a cable to do so.

Don't buy that car! Just buy another one with a cable (that you pay for) and be done with it.

Or here's another idea: tell the salesperson you'll only buy the £50k+ or well over £100k+ EV if it comes with a cable.

I feel either option is much better than just moaning about the supposed meanness of some car manufacturers to people who can't help you with that anyway. Don't you agree?

Have you never considered bartering for some extras?

Personally i do not need a plethora of charging leads. Do you?

BTW i have a number of cordless devices from one manufacturer . They all come with a charger which is a total waste and unnecessary clutter.

Me too!
What the salesman should do is: bump the price up to include the cable, then say ‘I have included a cable, but if you already have one, I can knock off £50 (or a quarter what the on cost to you would be)”

What EV is it? I haven’t seen an EV or PHEV that didn’t come with a Type 2 cable as standard. Extra for the 3 pin cable seems fair if that’s what you mean.

Last time I bought an ICE vehicle it barely had any petrol in it, I mean what use is that? I had to go and put £100 worth to even get it home. Completely pointless.

What car are you buying? Our i3 we got new in 2017 came with an OUC charger but no type 2 cable, which we just bought one. Our new e 208 came with a nice type 2 cable (in a lovely case) but no OUC one, so are buying one. My brother’s id 4 GTX, which he has now had for 2 years, just came with an OUC I seem to remember.
I doubt any ev will come with no cable at all, I think a type 2 seems to be standard these days for most cars as most people don’t tend to charge from a 3 pin plug socket these days (we have a tethered 10 metre Chargepoint charger at home which is always used for about 95% of our charging.

In the EU, the EU made it mandatory to include it.

I know this as when I was configuring a Taycan, the base price jumped 2k when starting to configure it.
Investigating this jump was as a note from Porsche that basically said: the EU makes us include this 2k EUR charging cable.
