Hi all,

Context here is that we’re looking to replace our i-pace, which we’ve run for the past 3 years.

We saw a Q6 e-tron on the weekend and it feels like the right size for us. However I’m not particularly fussed about having a brand new car, especially as I don’t have a salary sacrifice scheme that would make it tax efficient. On AT they are all £65k+, which is close to list price.

In contrast, used Q8 e-trons appear much cheaper. There’s a 24 plate with 9k miles for £50k, which is >£30k less than the list price.

Now I’m trying to work out what the sensible thing to do is. Will the Q8 e-tron remain cheaper than the Q6 for the foreseeable future because it’s an older model, or should the Q6s become cheaper once ‘lightly used’ models start appearing?

Obviously the rationale thing to do is to lobby the other half to buy a used Taycan/E-tron GT instead, but she’s sticking to her guns with the SUVs...

Taycans look like great value at the moment, but I have heard of quite a few people who have had early cars spending half their time in the garage - that’s a shame.

Q8 looks very tempting, and if buying used I’d definitely go for one over a Q6 - trust your gut there.

Ultimately, the 2-3 year old used EV market is a buyer’s paradise.

I'd be going Taycan ST. Can you pretend the CT is a SUV? Absent that, I'd probably go used Q8. Many bargains around.

This is exactly my stance - ST are a bit more pricey on account of being newer, but seeing CT come into budget. She's not a fan though...

That's tricky, on the one hand the Q6 carries the new model premium which will soon dissipate, on the other hand it has new 800V architecture and charges getting on for nearly twice as fast as the old-gen 400V Q8.

I suspect the Q6 may be worth a little more going forwards, early Q8s (just called 'e-tron') are really cheap now. However both look like pretty high depreciation prospects if starting from £50-65k today.

Tbh I'm not sure either the Q6 or Q8 are a great buy just now. I'd be trying to widen the net to consider the new Macan, Merc EQE SUV or BMW iX. Or if you really want an Audi maybe either go for a slightly older Q8 to start a little lower down the depreciation rollercoaster, or stick with the i-Pace for 6-12 months until Q6s start being discounted.

Basically if buying a new or nearly-new EV, IMHO you really want to be looking for a good discount otherwise you'll be losing money hand over fist in the first couple of years of ownership.

The Taycan's reliability rep isn't as bad as the I-Pace the OP is trading out of ;-)

Have a look at the Q6 forum over on e-tronforum.com, it will likely make your mind up for you.
