Hi,

Picking up my used hybrid Cayenne in a few days and need to to organise a home charger. Any suggestions?

Are back to grid type chargers worth it?

My only requirement is that it should have a relatively long cable.

I found this link which is useful but am interested to hear if everyone s opinion. https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-home-ev-chargers...

Thanks in advance.

(I hope this is the right place to ask this but moderators can move this to a more suitable forum if needed.)

I should have added:

7kw charger is fine.
Must be tethered.
Can consider a smart wall box and can change energy contracts too.

I’ll probably have a full electric car in the next 5-6 months too so prefer to buy the most appropriate product.

I have a pod point untethered but they do a tethered version as well.
Had it for 18months now. No issues, supported by an app that is a little clunky as in seems to take a minute or so for the instruction to turn on to get to the charger but this not a big problem.
It is quite a simple charger but does what says it will do.
I was lucky in that I got mine as a freebie with the car.
Installation was very quick and very neat, professional.
All good.
There are far more sophisticated chargers but the pod point does the job.

Until recently I've been happy with my Ohme home pro, app easy to use etc. it has packed up at 2 yes old and support from Ohme is non existent if they didn't install it and it looks ste on the wall.

If I have to spend more money on a charger (which I might have to shortly) I'll be getting a hypervolt 3, only downside I can see is WiFi only connection.

We're happy with our Hypervolt so far, but it has to be said that we don't really use any of it's fancy features (beyond Octopus integration) so any charger would probably do just as well for us.

I did have to put a WiFi extender next to it to get it to work, the range isn't great.

My independent electrician (with a very good reputation I hasten to add) recommends BG Sync or Ohme if you’re feeling flush. Any problems come back to him and he can’t afford to lose his reputation.

I bought this one about a month ago, I got the untethered one but I just leave my power cable attached to it. The app is crap but I set the charging schedule from the car so it's not an issue.

I like my freestanding Simpson & Partners 7kw charger because it doesn't look like I've screwed a toilet seat to the side of my house.

Wow that Simpson & Partners one isn't exactly subtle or in keeping with its environment (sorry!)

It's not bolted to the house so none of the neighbours will grass me up for making unauthorised alterations to a listed building though. I don't need it to be subtle, I want it to look good and I think S&P (or Anderson) look a lot better than all the others.

Thanks all. Very helpful. Hypervolt looks a good bet for my needs.

Hypervolt is a good choice aesthetically too, about the only charger the cable looks neat wrapped around it.

Choose one with a wifi connection rather than a SIM/4G.

Historically, Zappi were best if you have solar panels, but that may have changed now as the others have caught up.

I didn t want an ugly one and considered the Simpson and Andersen - in the end I got a tethered Ohme - fitted it inside the garage, barn doors not up and over, so the cable runs outside.

All we have on the outside of the house is a hook and a coiled up tethered cable

Edited to add - how big is the battery on the hybrid? When I briefly I had a Passat Hybrid I granny charged it and it was fine

You can buy a separate holster for any charger - this is what we did for home. I bought an Aurora Seren (don't) but being untethered, I've kept the car charging cable permanently attached to it and attached to a wall-mounted holster. A useful Amazon purchase!

Just piggy backing this post.

Has anyone bought there own charger, then paid for the connection separately?

I've a gen3 tesla wall charger that's in the box unused.
Online it appears everyone wants to supply and fit their preffered brand.

I'd rather just pay for the instal.

If so how much is the instal only?

Fortunately I'd like the wall charger directly on the wall outside the consumer unit. This is the external face of a garage.

Our trusted installer (a client of ours) recommended Zappi or Ohme. We went with Zappi and it has been fine so far. Before that we had a much older none-branded charger which failed last winter after 7 years of heavy use.

If yours is a listed building then you still need planning permission to fit an EV charger within the curtilage of your house, as listed building means no permitted development rights.

We’re considering fitting ours inside the (non listed) garage because I think that then circumvents the need for planning permission.

That’s my setup I have the 22kW due to having 3 phase supply but great charger and service from the company. I also have an Easee one which works great too. They all do the same. I followed my trusted electrician advice on the Easee and that paid off.

Easy job for a local sparks. We'd definitely take it on. Is consumer unit up to date (metal, SPD etc?). If not, worth them splitting the main tails and them putting in a dedicated sub-board for your EV charger if that's where the service head/meter is.
