In a bit of a whirlwind decision, my wife decided that she fancied something a bit nicer than our ancient 1.25 Fiesta with 190k on the clock :-( and declared that she would like to try an electric vehicle.

So we went to our local Renault dealer and tried out the Renault 4. It suited her very well indeed, and I think it looks great. The online reviews all seem favourable. We also looked at the offerings from Kia, Hyundai, Ford and VW, but kept coming back to the Renault 4.

So a deal was done on the showroom unregistered model. Should be with us next week I hope. Leasing it through my business for 3 years, and currently now researching charger units and electricity tariffs. I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to tech, so hoping it isn't all too complicated!

Any more EV Renault 4 owners out there?

Done that - and sort of wish I hadn't! Lots of comments regarding charging issues and disappointing winter mileage....I really hope the charging issues are overstated, because I really can't be arsed with more complications in life!

Range in winter will drop by circa 20% irrespective of most makes. I have a VW ID.3 and you adjust to the range drop so don’t worry about it…you’ll love driving the EV.

PS kudos to the mileage on the Fiesta!

I had a Renault 6 (Renault 4 with a bigger body) back in the late 70s biggrin

I don't have a EV but a full Hybrid sourced from Renault in a Dacia Bigster and yes! the mpg dropped like a stone as soon as the cold weather started.

60mpg, now 40mpg. Still good compared to petrol cars I've had before but was a bit of a shock at first.

I'd love to have the new Renault 5 or the 4 but with no way of home charging (in a flat) it would be a great inconvenience and not a money saver.

Shame, as I used to be a no way would I want an EV but now really enjoy the rare times my Dacia runs on electric only.

Enjoy the 4 smile Pics when you get it.

You’ll always find negative comments among the positive. Providing you set expectations you’ll be fine. I have a Scenic and although the car is great the app is an absolute POS - I’m guessing you’ll probably have the same app.

We bought the 5 as a runabout and really like it, especially after working out how to kill Reno, the irritating Avatar. In warmer weather we were getting 240 miles to a full charge but when the temperature dropped it fell to 190. I have the Zappi home charger (cost @1800 installed) but my home is modern so it was straightforward, no issues charging at all. Get the EV tariff from your provider and set it up to charge overnight, ours is the long range version and goes from 20% to full in 5-6 hours at a cost of £7.

If we get 190 miles in winter that is fine. Some people are mentioning as low as 130, which is a bit low for our usage. I've ordered the Pod point charger, which should be here in a few days, and my electrician will install it. It's a very easy install, on the side of my wooden office about 3m from a new consumer unit, so it hopefully should be fairly cheap and simple...

So, you don't use the car/app to set the schedule? I think this is where a lot of the issues are coming from with the car going into a deep sleep, and not being woken up by the charger?

I actually DO use the car to schedule the charge (Scenic). I do have Intelligent Octopus Go but I’ve had too many instances of the Mobilize not recognising that the car is plugged in and therefore not getting a schedule from Octopus so I just charge using the car’s scheduler between 11.30pm and 5.30am.

If you also use Mobilize always ALWAYS check that a schedule gets created after plugging in otherwise the car is likely to just start charging immediately potentially costing you a lot of money.

I set the charging schedule from the Zappi app on my phone and haven’t had any issues. Which battery size did you go for? Ours is the techno version with the bigger battery, maybe the 130 mile winter range is for the smaller one.

Picked up our R4 (Iconic+) 10 days ago, all good so far. Intelligent Octopus Go working as it should: plug it in and IOG creates a schedule for the requested amount and the required time. The schedule can alter dynamically but we've always woken up to what's been demanded. No schedules on the car, just using the Octopus app.

Had a little blip with the audio at the weekend when it all went quiet, a reset of the multimedia unit solved it and it's behaved since. I'll keep an eye on that.

Sometimes a car feels just right from the start and others take a bit of warming to, this one's the former. Too early for me to comment on energy consumption.

Yep, I saved it from the scrap pile during COVID for £180, and 5 years later it's had two kids to learn to drive in it and my wife has been using daily. It's a great little car, just rather (very) tatty! The engine refuses to die! I love driving it and will probably keep it for a few more years. Really want it to get to 200k miles before retiring it, plus I have the third kid still to learn to drive :-)

The only EV I have driven is the Renault 4 for a 20 minute test drive and it felt all very easy and relaxing.

It's the Iconic with the 52kwh battery. I think they only do that battery size in the Renault 4.

Great to hear. I'm looking forward to getting it (sorry my wife is looking forward to getting it ;-) )

In which case I can’t see any reason why it won’t do @180 in cold weather, we stick it in eco and use the regen and drive it normally the last charge returned 230 miles. Don’t worry.

Seen a couple of these now, 1 in baby blue and 1 in a burgundy\purple colour which was really nice, I think they they look great in the metal.
