Route for dad and lad?

Leaving Calais on the Friday morning. Son loves seeing all the other stickered up cars. I get bored after long periods on the autoroute dodging BiB.
Can anyone recommend a good route where son will still see his share of fellow enthusiasts while I get time on some N roads with hood places to get lunch and a beer ?

A16 from Calais to Abbeville which will put you in with all the other Le Mans traffic.

Don't switch to the A28 like everyone else but stick to the A16 to Amiens then take a cross-country route, say:
- D210 (between the A29 and A16) to Crevecoeure-le-Grand.
- D930 to Gournay-en-Bray
- D916/D316 Les Andelys and lunch.
After lunch cross the river and head through Evreux then you have a choice:
a) Continue cross-country to Le Mans
b) Cross-country to join the A28 at either Sees or Alencon, picking up the 'pack' for the home stretch.

That gives you a mix of Autoroute, boring for you but some car-watching for your son and BiB-less D roads that let you work your arms and legs, not just sit there in 5th gear going more or less straight all day.

Google maps and a satnav should get you there.

Also if on an autoroute stop at the full service centres to see what's parked up...usually lots of desireable stuff.

We have always gone from Calais to Abbeville, then A28 to Rouen then the N138 to Le Mans

The N138 has now been demoted to the D338 but its still a good road.
Plenty of motoring exotica to see, good places to stop for a drink/food and nice countryside to see.

Going all the way on the A28 is the quickest route but its very dull !

agree take the autoroute to Rouen and then use the old N138 the roads are typical french the towns/villages can either be bypassed or you can go right through them, stop any where on the road for a drink and sit there and watch all the fancy cars heading for Le mans

Have done this route in the past, Although quicker on the A28 the N138 is a nice drive. Lovely French countryside, good stretches of road to push the car and nice places to stop, rest, eat and view other cars. Also as you approach Le Mans there's a great reception from local's in the villages you drive through. Familys out waving at everyone en route to La Sarthe.
