European breakdown cover??????

Hi

Have been search around for breakdown cover whilst in France. Done the usual quotes from AA etc and they seem to be for just getting you to the local garage for around £80 for a '99 TVR Chim 450.

Been looking on PH forums and these seem to have a very cheap price- around £22 for the le mans period. They look like they get you home aswell rather than dumping you at the nearest garage.

Has anyone actually had to use this company and how did they perform. Im a believer of what you pay for is what you get, so for £22 it seems too cheap.

Also open to any other companys that have been tried and tested that have a competitive premium.

I have breakdown cover that includes my wifes car. When I came to renew the cover this year with a firm that also does windscreens etc, they quoted £280 for full uk cover for my car, and basic cover for my wifes.

Direct Line (operating through Green Flag) have given me full UK and european cover for my car, and full UK cover for my wifes car for £160.

About 15 years ago I used Green Flag to recover me from Portugal, following an RTA. They flew me and my passengers home, brought the car back by road. It only had to come back because it was only 4 weeks old, and without bringing it back to the UL a large import tax into Portugal would have been required!

As previously stated on a different thread I bought 12 months joint (Wife and I driver or passenger in any car) full european RAC cover via the Tesco clubcard scheme for £80 worth of vouchers.

This means it was technically free

Remember to check what your policy covers. I had a breakdown a couple of years ago and Direct Line tried to shaft me.

Under French law, if you break down on a motorway, you need to call a local tow company via the orange roadside emergency phones and they will take you to the nearest garage. Direct Line refused to pay for this. So my cover with them was basically worthless - and would have been for most of my journey unless I avoided all motorways between Calais and Le Mans - fine if you want the scenic route but not if you want to get there as quickly as possible using the autoroutes.

Have used AA 5 star cover in the past. Needed. It when the pinion bearing collapsed on the TR7 on the autoroute. They relayed us back paid for removal from the Autoroute, rejigged our ferry tickets and a whole heap of other stuff. Cost was 70 quid or so for the 3 days. The lack of hassle was prriceless. I always think of this when buying it and for Laon in a couple of weeks I've just paid 70 quid for the peace of mind.

By luck, I took out EU cover with ALPS (via my insurers, Manning UK) a matter of weeks before my TVR suffered a major engine failure a couple of thousand miles from home. It was half the price of the AA cover and spans the whole year rather a single trip. It worked beautifully - car trailered to the only TVR specialist in Spain then shipped home when it proved too big to fix in the duration of the trip. I meanwhile was given a hire car to complete the remaining 1,500 miles of the road trip. Couldn't have asked for much more. Except maybe a nicer hire car...

I used this company when I went to the 'ring last December. Very good. Had to ring with what I thought was a breakdown, but was out of fuel!!! Gauge had stuck, but that's another story.

Only thing I would say is their response time is hours not minutes!

RAC European Breakdown Cover is what I use, I buy it annually, not cheap at £200+ for both of us but well worth it should something breakdown.

my 'book value' is about £200 on my little Citroen but it's actual worth is closer to £3,000.. yet all the breakdown cover ive checked out basically states they'll give you the book price of the car and not return it home if it exceeds 60% of the book price to get it back..

worth checking out the small print..

I do the same as I typically visit France about 6 times a year. On the couple of occasions I have had to use it the cover is, as mentioned above, priceless for the hassle taken away. Covers autoroute fees too.
