Given the event we are all looking forward to this week, it would be apt if tomorrow as you go about your lives and business with freedom all around you, maybe you could take a moment to remember those brave souls who on 06-06-1944 during the D-Day landings fought for our freedom and in many cases made the ultimate sacrifice.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

A very apt post Sir, thank you OP.
Always think of my Uncle who was shot during the D-Day landings, luckily survived, and lived to a see late 70's.
Just visited my father before I leave for LM, 94 Years old, and going strong, fought, as a Sargeant in the eastern advance up Italy, Cassino etc, with the Gurka regiment, attached to the Royal Kings Own Lancashire Division.

Absolutely.
Also give a thought to those serving today, who may not be with us tomorrow.

If any of you are using the Portsmouth Cherbourg route its well worth taking a bit of time out to check out some of the ruins of the Atlantic wall at Point Du hoc and visit the cemetery at Omaha beach.
..and if you travel from Portsmouth to Caen (ouistreham) you actually arrive next to Sword Beach. Obviously lots to look at 'round there...If you have time and don't mind a little detour then Pegasus bridge is definitely worth a visit. I'd seen the film (mostly accurate, but a bit of poetic licence applied...) and read the book 'Pegasus Bridge' by Stephen Ambrose, but to actually go there and see the bridge brought it all to life. And the guided tour is well worth the time too.

We are all off to watch a race in france this week, 67 years ago many were going there to die. We are not worthy. Thoughts with them today.
...and 95 years ago 20,000 men were just 3 weeks from being killed on the first day alone of the battle of the Somme. 'Only' 2,500 allied troops were killed on D-Day.You might look out for the memorial, in the middle of the woods, in from the old le mans signalling pits from Mulsanne, on the inside of the circuit, to the American aircrew who were shot after capture after bombing the Le Mans luftwaffe airdrome to the north of the circuit. Look on the IGN bleu for the location. No car access, only bike or foot.

A good thought. I find it impossible to drive through Normandy without thinking about what happened there in 1944. If any of you pass through Bayoux (sp), it's worth taking a look at the D Day museum followed by a visit to the wartime cemetery just over the road. It's incredibly moving, especially the graves of the unknown soldiers.
