New Speed Camera on the A28

As in the title.
On my return this weekend I noticed it on the South lane (it was not there 7 days before).
Not the normal type either, long slim one with what looked like 2 or 3 cameras.

Sorry cant remember where it was which is not a lot of help I know but just be warned.

We were down there a few weeks ago seeing friends. Apparently they no longer have to sign them like they did in the past either. We were stopped on the way back for a document check, there was a group of French bikers pulled over as we joined the Motorway and a French car pulled a few miles further north. Our friends said that are having a purge at the moment.....

My understanding is that there is no reciprocal agreement in place between the French and UK with regards to speed cameras. If you get caught on one they can't send you the ticket in the UK. I certainly got flashed by one last year and never heard anything. Anyone know if this is an urban myth or not?

I understand your thinking is correct however I think the new cameras are digital and therefore linked to the old bill so easy to stop you when you pay your toll and also your car reg will be on record so if pulled you will have back dated fines to pay.

It doesn't work like that John. Fixed cameras are not the problem. The mobile cameras are. There's no database held by the French police of UK registrations (Just as there are no French ones held by the UK Police) If you're spotted going too fast before a peage gate then you could be in trouble but generally, they get you with bikes a couple of k's on. it's all very organised.
Still, best to keep it well under control at all times tbh. Anything more than 50kph above the prevailing limit is a confiscation and a fine of up to 3,750 euros (Gulp)

All the cameras here are digital and download pictures either in real-time, or overnight.

The absence of a reciprical agreement is the important bit of information.

Hand held lasers are your real worry, they read at about 1km giving them plenty of time to flag you down, one way, or another.

France has an agreement with Switzerland for recognition of licence points and suspension and is working on agreements with other countries, especially the UK.

Copied over from wikipedia. So that means for the moment it would suggest if you get flashed by a static speed camera, you wouldn't get a fine.

Concerning these new static cameras, and what is happening. Any new emplacement of a speed camera doesn't have a warning sign, a few hundred ft before. Instead you would see either a counter, showing your speed, or just a smiley or frowny. If under its green, and you might see a smiley. If over in red with PRUDENCE flashing. That means there is a speeding camera coming up next. It might not be close either. They now put these alerts maybe 3km before the actual speed camera, so don't forget. Also concerning these new cameras, you may see two. These are to define which vehicle was actually speeding if on two lanes one vehicle is overtaking another for example. The weather is great here now (30'c yesterday), and that means they are out in force, the mobile units. These are the ones to watch out for.
