What to do about noise from generator?

I think our neighbours were less-than-impressed by the chug of our generator, but there didn't seem to be anywhere on our pitch we could put it without it affecting someone. Spending loads of cash on an expensive silent one isn't really an option, so what's the best way to minimise the sound? It's one of these:

Rig it up to a PA system blasting out music & they'll never hear it
More seriously - we stuck ours between vehicles and stuff which helped take the edge off.

You could try a flange on the output?

We had a similar generator, but as it was new it seemed relatively quiet.

A group camping near us had theirs in a wooden box with a hole where the exhaust poked out. On the other side was another larger hole with half an office fan strapped to it for keeping air flowing through. Not sure this is really the best method of silencing a genny through!

Sugar in the fuel tank? Oh, you're asking from the owning a generator side, not the people who's tent you've shoved it right next to...

I had thought about a three sided box with a lid, and foam on the inside to try to trap as much noise as possible, just worried about it getting too hot.

decided not to take one this year, going to buy ice each day to keep the beer cool.

I've got a tiny Kipor IG770 genny and it's really quiet. All the folks that came upto our camp this year couldn't work out how we were powering our lights (and fairy lights!). It may only be small but it powered lights x 3, bose sound dock, fridge freezer, TV, scooter charger, various radio and phone chargers etc, basically all you need unless you want to power a hairdrier or a microwave! The best bit is it only costs £275 and uses about 800ml of fuel every 3 hours!
