Security and keyless entry

It's likely that I'll be travelling to LMC in the Focus which as the keyless entry system. Essentially, if you are in fairly close proximity to the car, it will unlock and the alarm disables if you open the doors / boot. You can already see where this is going...

I'm asleep in my tent which is all of six feet from the car, chances are with the keys in the pocket of my shorts in the sleeping bag, it'll still allow the car to open...!

Anyone know if the keyless malarkey can be temporarily disabled...?

Otherwise, anyone want to swap keys...? (No, not like that you smutty gits...!)

I suspect it won't work from 6ft away... but (try this first) why not wrap the key in tin foil for the night!

I'll try the tinfoil thing. From the front of the car it's not so effective but either side or behind, the keyless has a fair range on it, too much if anything.

test it, found that the keyless entry on my lexus wouldn't work from the tent... which was next door

My Clio has the same system and it is very local - you have to be right next to the car for it to work. However if you open the doors and don't take the key in the car with you it will not start on the "push button" (it is a renaultsport 197 you know)

Didn't work from the tent on my Z06 either. Although it does have the faculty to disable the passive entry feature if necessary

You have to stand right next to our datsun for it to work, does the fob have a mechanical key in it somewhere? Could that help somehow?

Thanks for the info guys. I'll ask my local dealer if I can disable it somehow. It has a key so maybe I can lock it manually...

Ive never had this request at work tbh (I work for a Ford dealer)....so its not something Ive bothered to look into. But the simple solution to me seems to be move your tent away from your car.

8th trip coming up next week thanks, albeit this being the classic this time around. The range aint very large at all on that system, you dont need to move that far away...we're talking a few extra feet here. If you get stuck I can always look into it for you at work.

Try 6' from behind the door. Theyre designed to open as you walk up to the door. If you are away from the back of the car you should be ok. There were plenty of Focus's in the campsites over Le Mans. They couldn't all have been unlocked!!

If you're still worried get hold of a foil anti-static bag and seal the fob in that as that should reduce its range.
