250 GTO Destroyed

I'm probably a bit late with this and there is a thread elsewhere, but bear with me. In today's paper here it states that a 250 GTO was near Blois and was turning left when a car overtaking the traffic t-boned it hard. The driver was taken to hospital badly injured and it was stated that he was british. I have searched the internet and nowhere is the name of the driver mentioned, but on one site it is hypothesised to be Chris Evans. Whoever, we all, I am sure, wish him well. His passenger was stated to be slightly injured.

On the F1 qualy on BBC today Chris Evans supposedly sent in a tweet saying he was at Ascot and it was sunny.

Firstly, hope those involved are ok.

Aside from the accident, I wonder just how much it costs to insure one of these cars for the road.

Hope all involved are OK - that's the most important thing.

As for the car, not matter how badly its damaged it will be repaired. if you see period film of many of these car in their active days they were tin snipped, beaten and bent - bearing no resemblance to their current pristine state.

Just thinking about it being repaired, presumably Ferrari's own coachbuilders will be involved to maintain "originality". Seeing as they are going for $35m, I wonder if you threw say $20m at Ferrari whether they'd build you one from scratch?

Many classics are built up from just a rusting chassis. As long as there is some original element it doesn't matter that the vast majority is built new from the blue prints.

Something of this value will be off back to Ferrari and things done properly.

On the drivers and passengers, I hope they make a full and speedy recovery.

On the car, whilst it is perhaps inappropriate to talk about it whilst the fate of the occupants are unknown, can always be rebuilt. I remember talking to the owner of a Lister Jaguar that was being driven at the Goodwood Revival, asking about whether he worried about his precious car being written off. He wasn't as he knew that even if they had to shovel the broken bits onto the back of a lorry, it could be rebuilt for £250k from just a chassis plate. It would just add to the car's "history".

The car is owned by Chris Cox apparently (not Chris Evans) and it was he and his wife in the car. Here’s whishing them a speedy recovery.

Regarding the car – it will be rebuilt. Given that there are still 38 250 GTO’s on the road (37 at the moment apparently) out of 38 built and, there are plenty of archive photos of wrecked GTO’s on the internet, it’s fair to say that nearly all of them have been rebuilt at least once. In fact one article states this exact car has been rebuilt more than once already.
