The problem is that in the weekend of the 24 hours its difficult to get in.

Have you ever ventured to Hotel de France in la Charte sur le loir about 40 mins south of Le Mans. We had lunch on the Classic Thursday this year, full on nostalgia, Jaguar stayed there in the 50s and used drive the cars up to the race.
Restaurant only good for nostalgia, food just average French ( which can be good ) but not Michelin *

If you want to have a lovely meal and you're happy to drive a little way out I would heartily recommend Auberge Relais Cheval Blanc in a little village called Beaumont-Pied-Di-Boeuf.

Formally Michelin starred. Matfeaux has retired now, but the food is still very good. Not cheap, but it is outstanding food and the atmosphere is simply class. There were even a couple of team managers and the odd driver in there the last couple of years. Location is great too, being just on the road heading out just south west of Arnage village, 8km and less than 15 minutes from the circuit. I have considered not posting this as it will make it harder for me to get my annual reservation!

You could also try Le Moulin des Quatre Saisons in La Fleche. It is closed Sunday evening but a lunch by the river can be special.

On a Thursday night, I knew the bloke a couple of tables away was familiar, only after he left I realised it was jan magnussen (a very pretty dining companion).
On a smaller budget there is another restaurant across the road which did amazing pizza.
There is so much choice in the area.

our group have had a meal a couple of times in a lovely little village called malicorne sur sarthe at a restaurant called la petite auberge. its terrace is right next to the river & its a nice village to have a walk round. its probably about an half hour drive from the track if i remember correctly.
