Pretty much take your pick of campsites that are still available.
I camped on Beausjour for the last 2 years (moving to Bleu Nord for this year) with only a small tent & had no major issues to speak of except it can get a bit noisy at night with loud music, which may be an issue with the young feller. Distance to the village may be an issue as well, it is a good 20-30 minute walk.
Also make sure nothing of value is left in the tent, just to be on the safe side. I have had no thefts, but it pays to be careful.
I can't speak much of other campsites because I haven't stayed there, but most campsites seem pretty relaxed these days, plenty of proper grown ups & families go to the 24 hours these days.

Just book it yourself, get a camping ticket from the ACO or The tourist office at le mans and book the ferry/tunnel yourself, most campsites are OK but perhaps the noisy ones might not be suitable for an 8 year old better to try and get one that is quieter and with better security try the above first and if they do not have what you want try the various agencies but some will try to sell you 2 tickets but you only want 1 the child ticket is either free or very reduced so get that there.
I'd try and get tertre rouge camping. Secure, not too lively, not too many cars moving about near tents, close enough to everything for children to walk to various parts of the track or to tram. Most campsites are similar but just a fraction less child friendly. If not I'd say white, green, blue then yellow (too far for 8yr old to walk back and forth on very busy roads). Hope that helps. Get looking if you want tertre rouge as they'll be running low as small site. Enjoy!
We took my 7 year old last last year and camped at Dairon next to Beausejour.
He loved it, although the walk up to the village took about 20 mins for us which was not ideal. Its a fair hike. We were often back at the tent fairly early each night, making sure he was awake enough to walk back under his own steam.
No complaints from him whatsoever, although this year i've booked Houx as its much closer - we will hopefully get to see the bands and visit the funfair in the evenings.
