I'm thinking about buying a cheap car to take to Le Mans, then assuming it makes it back, get rid of it. Anyone else done it? Benefits/pitfalls?

Are there any insurers who would provide cover for a few months, or is it best to take out an annual policy then cancel it and get a refund (less cancellation admin fees)?

What other factors should I consider when looking at buying a second car for short-term ownership?

Have a chat with your insurer or broker for your existing car about how they would treat it (could they add to your existing policy).

If it's a new policy and you cancel during the first year you'll get charged short term rates as well as any other fees - not good.

Some insurers on t'web offer cover by the day or week - not cheap but maybe a better option. Check what european cover you get, whichever route you go.

Common sense, but if you buy a sporty summer thing, either flog it as soon as you get back, or be prepared to hold into it for a year. Conversely if you buy a big four be four, probably better to flog it in winter.

If you are going to buy something perhaps a little older and special look at classic car policies they are often cheaper, you may find that joining the owners club will bring prices down further.
