What to do at Le Mans?

Thinking of heading down to Le Mans next year for the first time ever and have a few questions...
As the title suggests I am wondering, apart from the race, what makes this trip worthwhile and such an annual tradition for so many?

This was my first year and I found it great. Make a week of it and take it all in.
If you enjoy camping then go that route. I like a bit of comfort so stayed in a private home and enjoyed the local bistros. Great food and wine. It helps the locals benefit from the disruption. The tram is fab and expanding for next year. Left the track at 3.30pm and in a bar in the centre of Le Mans at 4.10pm!!!!
The Great British Welcome at St Saturnin is very worthwhile, drivers parade through Le Mans, the music evening in Le Mans on the 20th (1st day of summer in France) with over 40 free performers, the museum at the track, the Cathedral, the local cafe's who go the extra mile to provide what you want, those great French roads with little or no traffic.
On top of which you have a race. You can drive 2/3 of the track on Monday (at normal road speeds!!!!). Get a grandstand seat opposite the pits where you have also got TV screen coverage. Get the Radio Le Mans coverage so you know what's going on.
You will not be able to do everything in year one (Mulsanne straight at night in my case) but you will want to do it again so add it to next year's list.

Wednesday - Drive down and take some back roads, stop for lunch, etc. Trying to get your car impounded and throwing away 750 Euro is not the only way to do it.
Thursday - Shopping trip and just relaxing and switching off before catching a little qualifying.
Friday - Drive out in the morning to the Classic British Welcome to have a drive and spend an hour or so looking at cars. Back to base for lunch, dump the car and head in to town for an afternoon's drinking watching the drivers parade followed by a nice meal.
Saturday - Recover from Friday before heading to the track to watch the start, enjoy a beer/glass of Champagne before wandering home to fire up the BBQ and either starting the party or getting your head down early.
Sunday - Get up in the middle of the night to watch a little night racing, then more beer/Champagne/eating/watching until it's time for the finish. Either work your way home or keep the party going and have another relaxed drive back on Monday.

No1 do you plan on driving to the event or having your own means of independent travel or would you be turning up on a coach? Reason I ask is getting out and about around Le mans is a real bonus.
If you try to do everything in one go you will be pushing yourself to the max.
