Me and two friends want to buy a V8 barge such as an LS400 or 540i to drive to LM2014.

We'll be 24, 25 and 23 years old. How would we go about insuring it? Surely loads of people have done this. Day insurance doesn't seem to want to know from when I have looked for indicative quotes.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If any of you have existing car and insurance you might try and add it to that policy on a temporary basis. Good luck.

If you lot break down it's going to be like a Top Gear challenge. We'll all stop, laugh at you then drive on wink

Just take out an insurance policy with the eldest (or most insurable person) as the main driver and others as named drivers and then cancel it when you get rid of the car.

No claims discount may be tricky as it can only be used on one vehicle, however if one of you has Admiral they can make a multi-car policy and match the no-claims across two cars.

We insured our Le Mans Classic 6.8 litre smoker Bentley for a few hundred quid (4 of us own it) but we are old gits and it had to be kept at a reasonable location e.g. Inner London on the street didn't cut it even though it was only a few grands worth.

It even made it there and back too, although it was a bit Top Gear at times...

Have you looked into banger rally insurance? Try herts insurance, used them last year for 5 days in 4 countries and was about £70, without having to show any no claims etc. probably worth it if you actually had to claim as would be genuine cover. We got stopped by plod in Italy and they were happy with the cover. Good luck!

It's Team Sheds 10 year anniversary this year, we were all 22/23 when we clubbed together to buy the "Chavalier" that broke our Le Mans cherry. Things have got out of hand since a woefully underprepared first year with a support van and 50" TV (we will be easy to find in Expo as 2014 is a world cup year! ) bu we still take a shed every year even if it is amongst more exotic metal now. Biased of course but it's a great way to do it. We have usually added a second car onto an existing policy and A plan were great for this. Otherwise perhaps a fresh policy with no ncb to cancel on your return or even banger rally insurance as previously mentioned. Good luck, it will be quite TG at times but is a great way to do the trip!
