TV at Le Mans 2014
Discussion
Some of you might not know this but there is also a motor race taking place at Le Mans at the same weekend we will all be there having fun
Call me mad but some (actually, all!) of our group actually want to (try to) follow the race a bit better than ever before and are planing how best to do it.
We usually have Radio Le Mans on which is great but are thinking of extending this into TV territory. Do any of you know how we can pick up coverage? One of our group has a satellite dish and decoder box and seems to think Eurosport Germany would be a good bet. Unsure if it is possible to pick it up in LM, I suppose as long as you can point the dish in the right direction...?
Any tips or tricks are appreciated

You could always park yourself by a big screen. We've had a few years down at Mulsanne and its worked a treat. With all the screens up the only place you won't have coverage is by your tent and with RLM it's not too bad. It's a shame they stopped having the Kangaroos as they were top class bits of kit.
This will be my 8th year and I too have reached the conclusion that the only way to really follow the race whilst there is to have a TV setup on camp whilst eating etc.
I am reliably informed that Eurosport Germany broadcasts the race live. This, coupled with the fantastic Radio Le Mans commentary is what I'm planning on.
I have purchased a nice big "zone 2" dish and a tripod to mount it on, this will be hooked up to a free sat box and a nice big tv we've managed to
.
Eurosport Germany details can be found here

Going to try a rehearsal in the garden at some point! Good luck!

I've just bought a dish, cable and tiny receiver off eBay, need to give the setup a test now, fingers crossed.
The receiver I bought is tiny and looks cool, hopefully it works as well. It only cost 40 Euros new. It's called a "SaorTV HD100 HD Satellite Receiver". I'll only use it for LM or similar camping so the size is perfect.

And thanks to everyone with the helpful advice, sounds like one of our group might have a dish he can bring and we may be able to attach this to the motorhome's roof bars...
Possibly not a good idea. Since motorhomes don't have wind down legs like caravans they rock when you get excited (ahem!) and your dish might go off beam. It's well worth testing it all prior to heading off for France, so that you know it will work.
If you are using German Eurosport you need to point your dish a little right of the standard "Sky / Freesat" satellite. There are a few English language news channels, but if you turn the sound down you can use an FM radio for commentary, but doubt it will be quite in sync.
If you have acess to a sky viewng card which has a subscription that includes Eurosport, any sky box will do, which are only a few quid on ebay. That is probably the best bet, but German Eurosport is a good free option, I just guess it gets annoying when the coverage flips to Eurosport 2 (which isnt free)
Also for anybody planning to use German Eurosport, its worth scanning and storing all the channels back at home first, so that you can put the receiver on the channel you want when setting up the dish, rather than having to re-scan again in the field.

Someone here mentioned that there have been recent changes to the satellites. We normally do very well with an English box Sky card and standard dish, will this not be enough? Has anything changed since last year?
You'll be fine, as long as you take the box with the card in it and don't swap out your card it will work. Easy_Targa said:

Just before last year, the satellites were switched and the new satellite is further away from the field in France. Because of this, a larger dish was recommended for a stronger signal from last year and a smaller (standard UK issue Sky) dish may either be patchy, difficult to aim or not enough, particularly in cases of poor weather. The advice is that an 80cm dish is the proposed safe minimum from that location or further south, although a smaller dish may possibly get by.Easy_Targa said:

Here are some details of the changes and the effects on coverage and dish size required:http://www.a516digital.com/2014/02/special-what-ch...
There are a few reports here as well:

La Palmyre, near to Royan (May 2014)
We are on holiday in La Palmyre France, near to Royan Charente Maritime. The British owner of the rented static caravan we are in has a Panasonic Sky digibox, with a Triax dish measuring 70cm by 65cm, freesat reception is perfect. - Mark D.
That's a couple of hundred km south west of Le Mans so should we should be ok with the same setup as last year...We are on holiday in La Palmyre France, near to Royan Charente Maritime.
