As above, I'm off in my new car which I recently had plates made up for when I got a private reg. The plates are rather, erm, small - they are 33cm W x 11cm H. They were ordered as 'UK Legal' font but the car has yet to go through an MOT with them fitted. Am I likely to fall fowl of the police, or will they be more concerned by my speed by legality of plates?

As long as you don't have a dodgy font, and your documents match up, they won't care. If the plates are too small to have the blue band with the EU stars logo with GB underneath, you will need a GB sticker on the rear of the car....which is OK to put on the rear window.
My brother's car has small plates having a 2x2 registration, but he has the EU stars and GB marking too.

In the past they have targeted any visual discrepancy that will generate revenue.. If the plates are significantly smaller, you might get a pull, but if the Font is UK Legal Size, I dont see what they can do.
My Car has the plates cut down (private plate looks silly on a full size background), and I have around 10mm between the letters and the endge (20mm on the bottom because of the manufacturer mark) and Ive never had an issue in France or with a UK MOT.

That said ... if your gonna speed, they may look for other "excuses" to up the donation

I won't be speeding, but where I have put 'UK Legal' font (which is how hey were advertised), I am guessing the lettering is not UK legal size, merely it is the correct font. The dimensions may sound big, but that's actually approx. half the size of a normal UK plate.

If you're worried, is it not possible to get a pair of standard UK plates made up and just fit them for the trip? Most places on eBay could do this for less than a tenner, and should be able to do 24-48hr delivery?

I wouldn't worry, I have been over the last three years with a "small" front plate & never had an issue. I know, famous last words! I think they have more important issues to deal with.

I got stopped on our second year trip when I had a cross flag silver plate on the front instead of a number plate. I was running with a Team Kethup Sack Elise and a Ferrari at the time and the engine was relieving itself of oil all down the chassis so was worried it might be for speeding (speedo was bust). But just got a 90e fine for the number plate. I guess size might make a difference, no plate at all is frowned upon though.

haha! I'm in that club also. I've removed mine from the Atom and replaced it with a nice shiny Gulf sticker. Let's hope they're too blinded by Le Shiny Stickers to notice wink

Ive often wondered about replacing the front plate on my 400SE with a stick on one so i can open up the front more for airflow but ive heard they dont like stick on ones too.

how about a hinged one ... the faster you go, the more the plate hinges out of the way ... when you stop, it just hangs vertically "Whats the problem officer "?? hehe
