You need to have your change ready to throw in the hopper.

My Mum once approached without any change.. was chaos.

It's been a while since you or your Mum last went through, I guess.

It's all done online now : https://www.gov.uk/pay-dartford-crossing-charge

Yup, all changed now. Free if you go before 6am or after 10pm though

Oh right! A Northern lad should never have attempted to answer this question anyway.

Easiest way is to register your reg number and set up an account. You will have to upload some money using a card, but if you dont you will have to have internet access to pay the fee within 24hrs of you crossing.

it was hopelessly under publicised and those who rarely use it would have not taken any notice anyhow, and I reckon there are a lot of folks who unknowingly drive through and more than likely are getting away with it.
You can pay over the phone as well by the way.

Yeah, I don't understand why they done this to be honest. You would have thought for the one off occasional user tossing a coin in the barrel is by far and away the most effective way of paying the toll. But nope, some clever clogs now wants you to faff about buying a token from a shop or logging onto the Internet.

Anyhow my out bound journey will see me cross between 10pm and 6am, so no charge on that one... and I'll just have to remember to pay once I get home for the return leg.

I've set an account up with the tenner. Presume ANPR takes care of knowing when you cross?

A new traffic light flow system is turned on for northbound traffic this weekend coming (Saturday 13th) so expect massive queues on the way back when it completely fails biggrin
Might not be laughing if it's not sorted by Monday night frown although if it delays us past 10pm at least it'll be free wink

Can't believe that you can't just text your reg number and have it charged to your mobile bill. The skeptic would say it just a way of making more money by not doing it this way.

I'm hoping that our outbound trip will sneak us through before the 6am threshold, Leaving at 4:30am and the crossing is 1hr:15 away so hoping for no hold ups...

Also easy for Mainlanders, it's free now ;-)
We passed on 1st of May without paying and heard nothing since...
We were used to the coins and didn't know anything changed.

So HW is one of the estimated 18,000 foreign drivers who each month fail to pay the standard charge for using the Dartford Crossing. The system is crazy and there has to be a better way of collecting the Charge from ALL users.

I saw talk on facebook of speed cameras and a 20mph speed limit for roadworks at the Dartford Crossing at the moment.

Not sure which way this was, potentially from Kent back to Essex so for the return leg. I don't know anything other than the very high level 'warning' I saw on facebook but just something to watch out for.

Same situation again for mainlanders: speed cams do not recognize foreign plates ;-))

They were there in Kent last time I crossed a couple of months back. Hard to miss though and hard to do much more than 20 as you're too busy going "Where the feck does the road go?".

watch out if you do have an account, I got charged twice for a crossing in the same vehicle at exactly the same time.
