PMR446 Radios - PH Frequency

Following on from this thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=156784&f=25&h=0 what does everyone think to nominating a channel for us all to use on the way down to Le Mans, whilst on site and on the way back.

* Route advice can be given
* Camera / hidden BiB warnings
* Emergency help, breakdowns etc
* General chat
* Organising convoys

Just a thought.

Well I'll be on channel 2 on my Kenwood 3101 which equates to 446.09375mhz QT/DQT 8 (88.5 hz).

Gawd knows what all those numbers mean - its the easiest to set up to send/receive with my mates cheapo radio.

anyone got a recommendation for walkie talkies - currently got motorola ones which are ok, but fancy something with a bit more range? Any suggestions?

Bought the Cobra from Maplins - impressed.

Re-chargeable batteries, chargers and hands free kits with each one and a comparable range to others I've used too.

Batteries lasted ok over 2 days use this weekend too.

Thought they worked on a different frequency range as well???.....not much good if your the only ones with american ones!

Unless your radios operate between 446.00625 and 446.09375 MHz, (channel 2 is 446.01875MHz), then you wont be hearing a great deal!

So for the radio numpties, who are planning on spending as little as possible on these walkie talkie things, what should I be looking for in the Laminated Book of Dreams, or searching for on Ebay
Just going to be using them car to car on the way down, idealy want rechargeable style as these things usually eat batteries.
£30 seems to be the cheapest that fit the bill in Argos
And the choice on ebay without searching the net further has me totally lost

I take that as a no then? Would I have to get PMR446 to talk to other PMR446s?

channel 2 sounds good to me see and hear everyone on the tarmac.

To talk to other pmr 446 you need usually other pmr446's unless you can change the frequency. Frequency for PMR start at 460mhz

Be carefull on ebay as a lot of the stuff is american frequency range which will not work with PMR446 although some have a bigger range ie 10 miles as they are 4 watts and pmr446 is only 0.5 watts

We're all using the Oregon Scientific TP380ones from Argos, at £39.99 for a pack of 2.

Although you can go cheaper still at Maplin.

Just make sure it has the 38 sub-channels for eahc of the eight main channels, otherwise you might not be able to get any privacy as you get close to Le Mans.
