Hello people,

No doubt this topic has been covered before.

I usually take out cover for getting over to France on numerous trips as breaking down there is hellishly expensive. No issue covering newer cars but this time I'm taking my 29 year old bmw 6! So I'm not chancing things. A quick scan of the Internet shows most policies are capped at 16 years old. Can anybody recommend good cover at a sensible rate?

Speak to the RAC - No age limit - I just checked because mine is now 21 years old.

(Although I do have an annual policy)

RAC also cover the person not the car. That means any car you are in, driving or not, is covered.

Thanks chaps,

There was only really the AA and RAC coming up with the goods on this age of car. AA wanted £84 or £94 for a more comprehensive cover. RAC over £100 which sounds steep for a week in France.

Then Footman James chirped up, £68 for an annual breakdown policy including European cover, that'll do!

It s worth looking into this when you renew your insurance, I have a Hiscox policy through AIB which covers our Esprit GT3 (21 years old) BMW Z4 (11 years old) and Evora (8 years old) part of the policy is full UK & European breakdown cover for all three cars, great policy worth checking out, also gives me Comprehensive cover on any other car not owned by me, and allows anyone to drive our cars fully comp, who does not live at our address.

Both Footman James and Flux Rescue offer competitive breakdown recovery for older cars

I add European breakdown cover to my insurance policy for £30 on my 28 year old car, much cheaper than the big three breakdown services

If your old 6 breaks down an hour out of Calais - what are the ramifications? Cost of a hire car so you can continue your journey then the cost of relaying your beloved back to the UK? > £1000's. Consider that then I think you'll re-evaluate the price for cover.

FWIW I insure my E24 M635CSi through Classic Line which apart from being very reasonable also gives me European Breakdown - give them a ring when it next comes to renewal

My classic policy includes Eu recovery. Sadly I had to use it when my diff broke outside Calais. The service was fantastic.

RAC European cover through Barclay Bank covers cars up to 11 years old. My Cerbera is a 2004. Called them and they said it's still covered but there's an excess of £100 if I need to call them out. Happy with that.
