I've heard the horror stories so I guess it's just a matter of setting the car on cruise control at 85mph ( I assume a few Kph over is ok? ). Not worth the risk any higher, especially in a nice car. The Gendarmes would love to nick a nice british supercar.

Does everyone use Waze for alerts etc

Lots of French use Waze, it's the go to app for them.
Speed + 5% and you should be OK.

I really can't understand why so many people think it's 'OK' to go just a bit over. if the limit is 80KPH and you're worried about being dabbed for speeding, why would you then think they would be happy for you to do more?

I'm certainly not anti speed but on the occasions I do stick to the limits, I stay within the limit.

Came off an autoroute one year on my way to an overnight en route and was waved over by a gaggle of gendarmes. Slight brown trouser moment!! Quick word with the boys en bleu and it transpired they wanted me to help out a chap who had just had his licence confiscated for being a naughty boy. They were looking for someone to drive him home. I couldn't help since I was the only driver in my car. I usually stick to the limits. May have been flashed by fixed cameras once or twice and gone through an occasional red light. One of those was the flashing reds for the bus-pretending-to-be-a-tram at the Patte d'Oie roundabout.

I'm sure you probably already know this but most speedos read at 10% under. So I know the Mc says 85 but really it's 78 but like you said - hardly worth going 10kph over. It's only going to save you 30mins or so on that Calais to Le Mans route at best (of course in my head that's worth it but not when you take into account the fine !)

Yeah. Autoroutes are no picnic. Every year Le Plod finds some new and imaginative way to trap anyone doing slightly over the odds.

2013 was a vintage year. There was a single policeman laying in the long grass on the RHS in front of a bridge, parting the long grass with one hand and putting a radar gun through the gap with the other. There was a line of police bikes idling in a ditch behind the bridge. Luckily we were cruising at 80 and not being clowns.

Last year one of our lot was caught doing ~90 & change on the Monday on the way home by les gendarmes, who were pulling a similar ruse but this time had a man and a woman dressed in camo gear with binoculars and camping chairs pretending to be birdwatching in front of a bridge and the line of bikes behind.

Simple fact is, don't speed. GPS 80mph is about all you'll want.

The French police have this strange habbit of going out and catching people breaking the law.

British people breaking the law driving to/from Le Mans have this strange habbit of complaining about getting caught.

Wow !!
Isn't odd, how much time and effort they put into it nicking some- when France is on high alert (Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in France and Le Mans is on very high alert).

The French police changed their attitude after the likes of the Gumball were wreaking havoc across the autoroutes. High profile speeding, TV shows etc etc of them. That's what really changed. 20 years ago you could drive through France at 130mph on their empty autoroutes, without any issues.

Anyway. Stick to the limits and don't take the piss wink
