Anyone used the Sky Go app whilst camping? Can’t remember if the app works in France but I haven't tried streaming anything whilst at the circuit and heard that the mobile internet connection is pi$$?

Just wondering if there is a clever way of using a mobile source to get the race onto a tv screen without a complicated satellite set up?

Its v difficult to get any data at the circuit...with radio Le Mans and one of the giant screens you'll have plenty to enjoy with a beer in your hand.
When on my own the campsite is a place for sleep only, the rest of the time Im watching with radio Le Mans in my ears

4g and 3G was fine last year. You will need a VPN for skygo. Try TunnelBear or failing that pay for the WEC app and follow it on there . Live timing and live in car feeds as well as circuit cameras

Data was a massive challenge during the race itself last year but outside of that, was better than previous years.

I wrote a short guide on getting satellite to your camp this year, might be worth a look as you've still got time. It's easier than you'd think and the whole thing is on Free-To-Air German Eurosport.

We’ve run a dish setup for the last 5 or 6 years now and it works great. It’s hooked up to a TV during the day and a projector at night. I’ve found it pretty easy to find the satellite every year. I use an app called Dish Align and the longest it’s taken me to tune in the dish is around 15 minutes but usually have it done in 5. We’ll worth doing for when you’re chilling back at camp.

Cheers for the replies all. Satellite option would awesome but space in the car is an issue.

Having researched further, the SkyGo app doesn’t mirror to a TV so aside from huddling around an iPad that’s out.

I have found a lead on eBay that will mirror your iphone (with the exception of SkyGo) onto a TV. In theory I can use this along with the WEC app to stream the race to a TV screen.

This just leaves the elephant in the room; mobile data connection. Is it really that bad? Last year I managed to stream music from our campsite without issues?

Music you may get away with but video during the race (on Sat/Sun) I'd imagine not. Don't forget that last time I looked in to it, the video streams were ~2GB/hr as well so it gets pricey.

You don't necessarily need a 80-120cm sat dish per-se, you'll probably get away with a standard UK 40cm. Between that, the tripod and a box, you'd be able to fit it in less than the space of your average spare tyre I expect once flatpacked.

I have a short cable with input plug that fits the charge socket in my Galaxy S8 and a HDMI female output the other end. HDMI male to male then outputs sky go from phone to tv. Amazon is your friend. No mirroring needed. No good at LM though due to data problems. Even got sky go in Barbados using a VPN and wifi in our villa. VPN fools sky and bt sport, but not the bbc.

I do believe that doesn’t work on an iPhone either as the skygo app sees it as morroring!

This is an excellent article and spot on. For years we took the spare Sky+ from home. Then of course we got Sky Q. It is possible to take your Sky Q box, but obviously nobody left at home will have any TV!
We did last year with the Sky+ box and no card, but obviously only had free to air channels and no race on TV. This year I bought a box from Ebay for about £15 that will pick up German Eurosport. So the plan this year is pictures from there and comms from RLM.

Cheers for the replies.

Cheapo cable arrived from eBay and I can confirm that the WEC app which you can pay for full race streaming will mirror to a tv from an iPhone.

But if data really is going to the issue I’m tempted by the sat option. I’ve seen a lot of camping satellite kits with everything is included in the box. Second have for about £40. Anyone have any experience with these?

We have a very basic camping satellite system that works reasonably well. We get German Eurosport quite easily but obviously use RLM for commentary

Ok so I bought a second hand satellite kit today (pictured). It didn’t come with the satellite finder (just a flimsy compass thing) so I have ordered one on eBay.

In the meantime I just had a practice in the garden and failed miserably. I’ve downloaded the satellite finder app as mentioned in the guide above but no luck.

Am I being too impatient to expect to find a satellite without the satellite finding gizmo?

just take a look at the other dishes around you for a rough idea of direction and angle to start with.

then if needed something like this....

https://www.dishpointer.com

move the pointer around to where sited and play

and then try sited at LM so you can get the general feel of where to start when there.
I think its generally in the direction of Mulsanne corner/Golf Club
