Big problem with the support races is that they cant be more appealing than the main event, that and the ACO are trying to build up the ladder system for endurance racing - Group C / historic cars arguably look and sound better than their current equivalents, but they aren't bringing smaller teams and new drivers to the party. The LMP3 cup is doing just that - many have made the step up into ELMS after previous run outs in the support race, and its bringing through more gentleman drivers for the AM classes.
Much as I love the group C classics, I doubt they are driven at 10/10ths and TBH thats what the classic is for.
