I have been told numerous stories of people saying that it is illegal to use a sat nav system within France and if you a caught you will be made to drive over them.

Is this true? As I would like to use my PDA Sat Nav without having to worry about having it broken?

Nah, I've heard that it's illegal to use radar detectors, if found they will be destroyed there and then.

GPS navigation ~ bloody hope not, my map reader is directionally stupid !

Used SatNav every year without issue and since Michelin (French) are one of the biggest suppliers of map data for SatNav systems I don't think the French would bother with banning them, and what about all the cars that have it fitted...

Its just explicit camera detectors that don't like.

Just a thought, I know radar detectors are "not ok" and that satnav is "ok" in France, but is it ok to have satnav loaded with French speed camera sites as POI's?

Not POIs, via.michelin.co.uk actually shows the sites of cameras, as does the AA French road atlas.
It's back to the old chestnut of active radar site detectors being illegal.
There's no secrecy as to where cameras may be live.

I'm presuming the Inforad device is legal then? They alert you to the presence of cameras via gps but are not radar/lazer detecters.
Anyone think different?

AFAIK they are.

However if you don't know the French camera sites, then leave it home and avoid any potential agro.
