Dear all, who will be using Waze to navigate or is there a better solution? It is good for active 'Hazards'...

My partner uses Waze, but I prefer Google Maps. There's no need to worry about hazards with blue lights on top of them if you adhere to the speed limits and respect the French laws.

Ignoring the sanctimonious response, I’d recommend using Waze

Waze is excellent in France. Even the smallest point of interest is easily searchable.

Lord knows why anyone uses built in satnavs scrolling and clicking through menus trying to type in an address one character at a time.

All the Le Mans campsites are marked, so no need to get lost.

I use Sygic. It has downloadable maps and gets regular updates. It's not free though, but handily for a trip to Le Mans there is a 7 day free trial..

Last couple of years I’ve used the car sat nav for navigation but had Waze idling on the screen for alerts. Worked well if a bit clumsy to get up and visible again after reversing or setting a sat nav destination but that’s more an indictment of BMW’s CarPlay implementation than Waze itself

I do the same in my 911, Waze always running in the background on all journeys for any alerts.

The sanctimony is strong in this one.

Waze is great but it will sometimes use some funny routes, we ended up late for our train last year due to waze routing us an odd way round rouen.

That said I think we'll still use it but have gmaps open as well.

Sanctimonious it may be, but it's also the most sensible response. wink

It does seem to have some built in objection to sending you down the simple 'alongside the railway' route. Technically routing through the suburbs and not stopping might be a few seconds quicker than hitting every red light on the railway route but it is definitely a hassle (and more chance of making a wrong exit from a roundabout etc).

One assumes being attacked by the sort of people who post on their return about "The French police ripping off Brits."...by having that audacity of applying French speeding laws, in France.

Google for directions, Waze and Radarbot in background, Radarbot has some advantages over Waze et vice versa, so run them together.

Waze every time

Went off normal return route through Rouen for petrol and then went across a free ferry before some hill limbs to emerge other side of tunnel - but an adventure

Did struggle with some road closures near before Calais last year as well but fine on main routes

Does your car satnav get updated OTA?

Ours don’t: we use Waze & sometimes have the car satnav in the background for confirmation (or to make us double check if they disagree - invariably Waze knows more, especially like traffic flow….).

Haha! Yes, Waze took us that way last year. Very odd getting on the ferry and then not having to pay for it. I remember exiting out of Rouen via some fairly dodgy looking area that I wouldn't have wanted to stop in and then suddenly we joining the motorway north of Rouen

The Waze detours are often a bit random but always great.
