A group of us (all veterans of the 24hrs) went to the first Classic (2002?), when it was held in September rather than the July planned for 2006.
We stayed in the Novotel rather than our usual camping, so I can't comment on what, if any, atmosphere there was at the camping.
The crowds were much less than the 24hrs, with only a small number of non-French people there.
The advanced publicity suggested there was a Jacket-and-tie dresscode for the main paddock, but there didn't seem to be anyone enforcing that.
The racing was split into age related classes with several short (30mins?) races for each class, spread over the 16h00-16h00 period that the 24hrs is. I believe they have changed the format now to get more racing done during the Saturday morning and early afternoon.
The only tedious track action was the very early cars as they were so slow there was a lot of empty track whilst they completed the full lap.
With the new road from Rouen to Alencon openning in time for the 2006 races, then making a weekend trip should be even easier.
Hopefully I'll get to go next year again.

Happy Snapper and I went in 2004, we stayed in the Ibis in Le Mans rather than camping.
As said above this was a very different event to the 24 hour. It was very nice and I have to say refreshing to see the circuit without groups of sunburnt, pi&&ed brits passed out around the village!!
Many more French there and much more like the atmosphere of the old Silverstone Coys festival. IIRC most of the paddocks were open so you could wander around and look at the cars(having said that we were media).
We're planning another trip next year but will probably camp this time, mainly so that we can duck in and out of the racing without having to go out of the circuit and into Le Mans. We struggled a bit with the weather as it was VERY hot, hotter even that the 24 this year and this made it all hard going - I think having the campsite to go back to would be more pleasant.
The traffic for the Classic seeemed much worse than the traffic for the 24 but perhaps that was because we were trying to get in and out of the circuit in the day which we don't do for the 24?

Based on last year, and what we have been told so far this year, Maison Blanche will be the only one of the camp sites to be open to the GENERAL public.
Houx will be once again set aside for teams (which is fair) and some of the other camp sites are being offered to the larger car clubs (Tertre Rouge is being offered to Triumph cars for example. Don't know if anyone else will get offered one - believe Morgan's we be at Bertrands inside the circuit and MG's tend to be too gay for Le Mans - turn up a Portsmouth ferry terminal en route to Le Mans to find loads of MG's... who didn't know it was Le Mans that weekend and wondered why there were so many other classic and sports cars there. I mean, geez).
Enough ranting.
Maison Blanche peaked at about 75% capacity last year - turn up on Sat. morning and you could pitch your tent OK.
Not heard anything firm on changing the way things run (and know someone who ran a car last year and has entered for this year) so we are looking at around 8 car age based grids of cars, each getting 2 day and 1 night session each on the track. Rolling through the grids, with 30 or 45 minutes of racing with 15 minute gaps to change grids.

A GREAT weekend
- they sum up the weekend - although I feel obliged to add that ties are optional!!! Have a look at www.tssc.org.uk/lemans - we are organising a big Triumph contingent for 2006, and have booked Terte Rouge in its entirety. Our intention is to have a massive Triumph gathering, but if we have space may throw it open to other clubs/groups in the new year. We are doing some good deals on camping, entry tickets and circuit laps!

Yep the Cobra Club are heading down in 2006 and at the moment about 50 or so cars will be in attendance including 2 or 3 Daytona Coupes as well. We will be occupying a goodly chunk of Maison Blanche, so dont expect to much peace and quiet there, especially if our weekend at total kit car live at brands was anything to go by!!!
